Hydraulic cylinder

I bought this old hydraulic cylinder. I tested it with air and it extends when you blow air into base and retracts when you blow air into piston rod end. My questions are I wonder what this cylinder was used for? And secondly the piston rod is 2.5" in diameter and outside of cylinder is 3.5" in diamter. I wonder if I could use it on a scissor lift for an 8' dump box? I have a single stage hydraulic pump ( pumps a lot of oil quickly) or should I use a dual stage pump like the one on my wood splitter? I have a gear box to bolt to my transfer case transmission in this GM one ton 4x4 chassis. Curious to know what the cylinder was used for in the past especially with how oil enters piston rod end.

I wouldn"t use it until it could be identified, so working pressure could be known. Otherwise it could blow up on you.

All I can find on it, is on cylinder barrel stamped "J7", and on end of ram "8961". The stamping you can tell was done by individual character stamps. Also it has remenants of gray paint on it. Owner of 2nd hand goods store passed away and I bought it off his son so application unknown. It's unique that oil enters end of ram rather in both ends of barrel. By the pipe wrench marks on it you can tell its been taken apart over its lifetime. I'm interested just to take it apart to see its condition inside and how it works. I figure I'll take it to the local tractor shops to see if they can identify it. One parts guy is an older gentleman who is a retired Case mechanic. He seems very knowledgeable.
