JD powertrol question

I have a 1954 john deere 60. I recently got a barge box wagon with a 7 ton Midwest hoist with 1 hydraulic hose. I couldn't get the box to go up even when empty. I did a little research and added another hose to the ram end of the cylinder. It still won't go up. I added a little fluid to the powertrol reservoir and it still won't go up. Should I have filled the new hose before installing? Is the hoist cylinder bad? My tractor will run a two hose cylinder on my 3x14 plow and our harrowgator so I know my pump is working right. Not much experience with box lift cylinders. Any advice helps. Thanks in advance.

Since it originally had a single hose, it is a single acting cylinder. Hyd pressure takes it up, gravity brings it down...

Take the line loose that you added, hold it over a bucket, try to raise the hoist. If oil flows from the top of the cylinder and the lift does not go up, the cylinder internal seal is bad.

When you operate the valve, can you hear the pump load? If not, there is no pressure going to the lift. If the pump loads you should be able to see the hyd hose jump if pressure is making it to the cylinder. Possible mechanical bind?

The hoses do not need to be purged of air, it will clear itself. May be a little jumpy first cycle, but it will clear up.

In this case you are using the other side of the hoist cylinder as a reservoir. Did you fill the cylinder? Not a huge problem if not. Just keep adding fluid to the powertrol and cycling the hoist up and down. In due course you will be good to go.

Your 60 has a REALLY low pressure hydraulic system by today's standards, and MAY not have enough pressure to lift the empty wagon because of the hydraulic/mechanical advantage when the hoist is folded.

Do you have another tractor with a 2000 or 2500 psi hydraulic system to try, to verify the hoist actually works?

On my 620 the hydraulic pump runs off the distributor drive. There is a engagement knob to turn to turn the pump on and off. If the 60 is like that maybe the hydraulic is not engaged.

The knob is engaged. I believe it's a double acting cylinder. There was a breather on the ram end of the cylinder I removed when I added the other hose. I'll keep adding fluid to powertrol and see how it goes. We've got a IH 706 or a JD 4320 to hook it to to test the cylinder to check to see if it works when I get time. Thanks for the tips!!

Breather on ram end means it is a single acting cylinder.

Fluid goes into the bottom of the cylinder and pushes the piston up,air escapes out of breather on other side, when lowering it is opposite, no fluid in rod side of cylinder. you also need to find out if you have closed center or open center hydraulics. I don't think it will work with closed center BUT, I have been wrong at least twice before (;>]

Your 60 will lift it empty with no problems if the cylinder isn't blown. If no oil blows out of the breather the piston seal is probably OK, ruling out a blown seal. We used to raise many, many loads of ear corn in 6X10 and 6X12 Heider wagons with two 12" side boards and Midwest hoists under them using an A Deere and SC Case. The SC struggled and sometimes couldn't do the job with the 6x12's but the A lifted them every time. The 6X12's with 200 bushels of shelled corn were too much for the A to lift though.

Stupid question; are you moving the hydraulic lever the right way?
