using o rings in seals

friend of mine helped me put in steering box seal on my mf-65 and said if you put an o ring bigger then size of the seal thats in the frame of the seal, would help seal better. we did that with this seal & will see if it works. we compared the seal with the o ring and without and it does compress the seal against the shaft with the o ring added. dont know if this would work for all seals.

Are you placing it over the tension spring of the oil seal ?

Or do your seals not have the spring.

If the new seal is in an old shaft groove, it can help. If not it can reduce the life of the seal considerably. Seals must be a tiny bit leaking or they rub rubber to metal and like an eraser turn to dust. Jim

Some [many?] O-rings are designed to sit in a polished-both-sides, correctly sized groove, which must be lubricated. The O-ring is meant to flex and slide back and forth very slightly inside the groove. One side of the groove itself can slide. Many things can go wrong; not the correct lube, not enough lube, not the correct polished surface.
