Tractor Only Runs Wide Open

Well, my shop tractor (IH 2444) has been giving me a hard time lately... I had to take apart the fuel line to change out an elbow (thanks to everyone who helped with my last thread) and figured while I was at it, why not clean out the carb as well?

So, I did that, taking care to reset the throttle and mixture screws to how many turns they were at, when I removed the (Zenith) carb from the tractor.

Then, I put the thing back together and tried running it today, and it will start, then half a second later it goes straight to wide open throttle. I have no idea why. The linkage looks good, it moves the throttle plate back and forth when you actuate the throttle lever, and everything seems fine.

It just runs wide open.

Any thoughts/ideas?

New equipment is starting to look pretty good, I cant have this thing constantly slowing things down at my shop...

Possibly governor attachment is faulty somewhere. Sorry, I'm not familiar with that tractor but have a very old vague memory of govenor difficulties.

Did you remove the throttle shaft? if so it sounds like you got it in half off, and the governor is pulling the throttle open when its soppesed to be at idle.

No, I left it in place and only removed the throttle plate for cleaning. Is it even possible to put that back on the wrong way?

My guess, and its only a guess, is the two screw holes are not in the center line of the throttle plate. If the throttle plate is installed wrong it won't shut all of the way. It doesn't need to be open all that far to make the engine run wide open with no load.

The throttle plate is one way only, and has a rdge taper that matches the bore. it is also necessary to tighten the screws (with locktite) when the plate is being held closed (with the idle speed screw turned out). This centers the plate and prevents binding against the sides of the bore. Jim

When checking if the throttle plate in correct you can tell when looking down in and seeing if it will close tight. The only way any make, model or style of carburetor throttle plate that is in correct and not sealing tight is when the stop screw on the back is holding it open to your idle speed. Back the stop screw out to make sure it is closing then reset it on start up. Something else to put in your detail memory bank for future use.

Sounds like the throttle shaft got turned 180* when you put the plate back in. Somehow the governor is opening the throttle instead of bringing it down to run speed.

Sure sounds like you have some linkage incorrectly attached...

Look it over real good and you may see what it is..

Are all springs attached as should be..?
