massey 35 clutch problems

Hey I'm new to here and to tractors. But I have a massey 35 with clutch problems. I was going down hill in hi gear shifted to low and when I left off clutch I noticed it to feel soft. Once at bottom of hill I pressed clutch and tractor kept moving not allowing me to put into gear. It was grinding. In order to stop in had to shut tractor off. I'm hoping this is an easy fix cause I'm not as handy as most.. any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like what happened with my '50 8n. I was bush hogging, step on clutch and tractor kept going....no noises, just my pucker factor went off the scale. I split tractor and found a broke finger. Replaced pressure plate, release bearing, pilot bushing, input shaft seal and resurfaced flywheel and it is as good as new. Reused clutch disc as it looked like new. Not a high tech job, just be careful with supporting the engine from shifting and using good support devices.

I guess you missed the part about me not being handy lol.. I ca read very well a d the only part I understood was split tractor lol.. I surly hope this is the last result thing. Cause little red maybe sitting for awhile. Is there anything I can to to trouble shoot before I get to the splitting part. Just to give you a better understanding on my knowledge of fixing things. I was very proud of my self for taking starter off to get rebuild. So please bear with me if I have questions that might be dumb to you but very new to me.

yea there's slim to none in my area that work on tractors.. so I'll have to get handy real fast seems like.

I just had this problem with a Ford 600. The clutch plate was rusted to the flywheel. I tried to break it loose by rocking the tractor driving it and applying the breaks and pulling it with another tractor. Nothing worked, time to split the tractor. I have found to support the engine and put a floor jack under the transmission so it can be moved back to access the clutch. After splitting the tractor I found water sitting in the bottom of the bell housing. It appears the water is from condensation. The clutch plate was stuck to the flywheel. A neighbor stopped by, saw what I was doing and left, said something about a birthday party. The only help I had was my wife, she is a good buddy and helper. She follows direction and said it was fun, I don't know what she was smoking. Remove the pressure plate, don't loose the bolts they are a special bolt, the clutch plate and flywheel. The flywheel is heavy, unsure but maybe at least 50 lbs. I replaced the throw out bearing, pressure plate, clutch plate and pilot bearing. I had the flywheel resurfaced, Napa or CARQUEST can do this. I also had them replace the ring gear. You don't want to do this again if you don't have to. You can order the parts from this site, they come in a kit. Make friends with someone that knows how to do this. Have fun, Bill

is there away to access the flywheel without splitting apart. That being said I don't even know what a flywheel is nor look like. Gonna try rocking pulling and break cleaner to try and free it up.

Just an outside chance, check the bolt where the clutch pedal connects to the clutch rod. It may be loose and it may have slipped. In that case just adjust the clutch pedal to 3/4" free play. Good luck. You may get lucky and have an easy fix.

Unlikely that the clutch plate rusted to the flywheel while he was driving it. As I read it, the problem occurred while he was driving it.

I looked on YouTube and this was the closest I could find. If you look at it as a hobby, and if you don't the tractor immediately, you might find it as fun.....probably not, but anyway, maybe this will help.
Splitting Tractor.

Since you are not familiar with the mechanics of your tractor, I would suggest helping yourself and this site by buying
a service manual for your tractor from these fine people. One of the real shop manuals instead of the cheap "IT" brand
would be a good investment.
