How good are 14T JD balers?

Have a neighbor that has a 14T JD baler I was looking at. How good are they? Any bad spots to look for? Do they make decent bales? Dad had a 224T but I don't know much about the older models.

I had a 14t baler and it was OK and later I bought a 24t and it was even better. I have never owned a 224 but as I recall they used a hydraulic bale thrower much like the JD 36 baler. The Amish around here use old JD balers and they have found it is getting difficult to find parts including the needles which tend to break. If you are going to bale a large number of bales I would leave the 14t resting where it sits. Happy farming!

When correct operation of plunger head stop is overlooked(ignored) then any brand sq baler is susceptible to braking needles if timing gets off.

Good baler but slow and can't handle large or irregular wind row worse with wisconsin engine.

Dad bought a 14T in 58. I was 13, just right to use it. Also a 350UD IHC, with independent pto, and a torque. I thought it would out bale anything! Such is life. LOL Vic

Your dad's 224T replaced the 214T which was just a heavier version of the 14T. The JD 6 and 7 series balers can be had cheap enough I wouldn't bother with any of 14T through 224T balers.

We baled for many years with a 14T. Had a Wisconsin engine on it. Made good bales and tied ok, just slooooooow. It sits in the shed as a backup now. We use a NH311 that will bale in 2 hrs what the 14T would take 4-5Hrs.

They were good enough to make enough hay every year to keep a 45 cow dairy herd going.
Getting a bit long in the tooth now but if kept up should still do OK.

Like other have said, its getting awfully old. I would consider going to the newer versions.

Why not look for a wire baler? Sure makes better bales and never had a mouse chew a wire in two.

I've owned wire balers since the mid 80's. IMHO quality of baling has diminished drastically over the last few yrs. Baling back then came drenched in oil now I have add oil to rolls of wire to keep my JD 347 wire baler tying. I would like to trade my wire baler for a twine model but I'm in the twilight of my baling career.
