F150 that only has the normal transmission cooler in the radiator.
Used for light occasional towing.

1) What is your thoughts (good; bad; and ugly) about add on auxiliary transmission cooler you put in front of the radiator?
Brands; size; needed or not; tube or fin strength or design

If you are towing or hauling the max weight with it over extended trips, like 100 miles in hilly country, yes to both. If not, do not bother. Jim

Oil cooler not really necessary, you hold better part of seven quarts. With regular changes it'll be fine. Engine was designed to run at a certain temp, with external aftermarket cooler oil temp could drop. Trans, if pulling heavy and long distance I might.

I work in a transmission parts warehouse, and we sell tons of coolers like you're looking for. The best ones are the stacked plate type. Tru-cool made by Long manufacturing are one of the best ones out there, although some made by Derale and Hayden are good also. Just be sure you buy one large enough for what you're doing with the truck. Diesel engines, and towing heavy loads need a large, effecient cooler. They rate them by the GVW of the vehicle and load. It's hard to make a transmission too cool, so go big, as in one rated for 40,000 GVW or more. Most diesel systems will need one with 3/8" or 1/2" lines, so check what's on there now.
If you'd like more info, drop me an e-mail and I'll give you the phone number of our warehouse. You can call Monday and we'll help you out.

I don't know that I'd be too worried about engine oil, but I won't hook a trailer to anything that doesn't have a separate cooler in front of the radiator.

With one exception. My good pickup is a Tundra. It has a thermostatically controlled cooler in front of the radiator. It also has a fluid heater in the transmission. If a cooler was added that did not have a temperature bypass the transmission would fight to heat itself when not towing a load. Kind of like opening the windows with the furnace on. I guess the point is - check your transmission.

On the engine, if it doesn't have anything, I might add a small engine oil cooler. On the trans, if towing regularly, I would add one. Either run it without going through the radiator, or go through the rad first, then through the auxiliary cooler. A stacked plate is supposed to be the most efficient .
