1963 Ford 2000 Select-o-Speed transmission issue

Recently purchased tractor and have discovered that
clutch "probably not correct term, but performs same
activity" intermittently fails to disengage transmission.
Would appreciate any ideas on what may be wrong with
this tractor. Result makes tractor somewhat unsafe to
operate in confined environment or proximity of other
people.

Welcome to the world of Select-O-Smash. The "clutch" just dumps pressure to the clutch packs etc. There are some reproduction manuals available that cover the SOS transmissions better than the I&T. Invest in one. Change trans oil and filters, and use the (very expensive) OEM oil.

I apologize but my knowledge of this particular tractor is
limited. It is not like a manual clutch which uses a pressure
plate. Only has a small petal to depress which takes very
little effort to press down. My quess is a change in transmission
fluid routing away from clutch pack to effectively disengage
powertrain. Are there any additivies that could be used to
remove varnish buildup or revive seals. Someone else has
suggested change in fluid and filter.

the oil in question[transmission fluid ?]. Will I only be able
to purchase such at a ford tractor dealership ? I assume it
has a grade or weight ? The only manual I currently have is
the I&T manual. What manual would you endorse for a more
comprehensive clarification of this tractor's mechanical
maintenance/repair requirements.

The IT manual may tell you the specification of the oil. With that you should be able to match that up with most brands.

Check your local area and see if you can't find an old Ford tractor mechanic. That would be the best help. We have 2 I know of in the local area here who are very familiar with the SOS tranny.

Check Fleabay for the actual Ford repair and owners manuals. Parts manual is nice to have too if you can find it.

Generic UTF that lists "134" on the label will be quite SWELL for that power shi* tranny.

The parts catalog can be viewed or printed for FREE at the FIAT website.

There's a zillion places on the 'net to buy reprint shop manuals, or the FIAT dealer can get them $$$$ for you.

I would recommend a good flush with diesel fuel. When I got mine I changed the fluid, and after about fifty hours after about six years I changed it again and I was amazed at how many little particles were in it. A little particle is most likely your problem, So draining and refilling with fuel, then with the traction disconnect disconnected just operate the inching pedal and shift through the gears a lot. Then drain and repeat. I believe chance of success is probably close to 50 % and all you have to lose is time. Remove and clean the screen as well. After flushing and becoming familiar, with service you can change the interior filter, available from Dennis Carpenter.
