A chain is only as strong as the weakest link....

especially on the apron chain of a fully loaded manure spreader.....and then the second weakest link breaks (after destroying a number of slats) when you don't notice in time.

Zero! That is what a loader tractor is for, just roll it over and let gravity take its coarse! LOL

Many many like fifty years ago when I was really full of ***a lot*** and vinegar. I used to shovel out the Heafer barn and that was an 80 bush poop wagon. One and a half loads to do it. When I got over one hundred scoops and the first load wasn't finised, well I stopped counting. Don't ya just hate when you hear that gut wrenching snap!

reminds me of what happened to me about 20 or so yrs ago .. rented a fertilizer buggy from my neighbor who is 25 yrs older than me ,. and supllied neighborhood with agrichemicals ,,the floor chain broke with 80 percent still full , it had been a long day.. .. nuthin else to do but take it back and fix it,.. fella says ,well lets shovel it out , he took one end and I took the other shoveling scoop for scoop ,. we were really making good headway . I was about 35 and he was south of 60 then , both of us were healthy bulls ,, and there was no way I was gonna stop before he did , and the job was whipping my butt, but I would not stop, and kept matching him shovel for shovel.. finaly, I hear him stop and cuz , saying "gotdam don't you ever wear out !! , I dropped my shovel and said ,
' hale yes , but I am younger than you and I cant let you out work me! " ,,. we took a 10 minute break, and talkt, he has been like a good uncle to me ever since ...

And if you do it right the spreader is irreparable when you are done.

I dunno. I was usually more concerned about getting it shoveled off before the -10 temps and +20 mph winds froze it in solid! Also was too PO'D to keep track of the shovelfuls. Lol!

How many shovel fulls does it take to unload a railroad boxcar full of gravel? Becuase [believe it or not] the state local foreman did not sign the agreement with the city to use the unloading chute right next door? Takes the whole crew, all day long. Who then told the foreman We're all gonna quit, you ever do this again. You moron...

When I was a kid we had a Deere model M ( I think). When the apron would break dad would put me on the tractor in low gear and he would get in the spreader and start pitching. When I was old enough to pitch manure myself, and the apron broke I would be out there alone with the tractor in low gear wandering around the field while I pitched. For that small spreader I would guess 200 forks would empty it.

After we got a loader with a hydraulic bucket I could dip most of it out with the loader. MUCH easier! Like Gene, my joints are now revolting from all the years of handling that pitchfork.
