They are starting to die here. I knew it was just a matter of time. My question....how long will they be good for firewood? I really like to burn ash anyway so it's not a total loss. Can they stand a year or two without going bad or do I need to get them cut soon? I have more than one years worth of wood and don't need that much right way.

Most here (SW MI) are dead already- a lumber man told me this is possibly the best way for the wood, the bugs kill the living layer of the wood, then leave without destroying the integrity of the tree. The wood dries naturally in a vertical orientation, often without the bark to slow it down. He is harvesting many dead, dry ash trees and I used the wood for a couple wagon decks successfully.

I rented a lift basket to trim the fence lines, and found several bone dry ash trees to take down. They were extremely solid through and through, should have left them standing.

Great wood to burn, smell is wonderful. I'm in Western Maryland and and cut down a few after a hurricane 10 years ago. All of the un-split sections are still good and dry and they have been lying on the ground. Standing wood should last a long time.

I'm gonna cut mine as they die, that is, if they are accessible for firewood. The dead tops will get dangerous - sooner cut, the better.

The boy went out to mark some last weekend while the leaves were still on the live trees. He said he should have taken two cans of paint. It looked like winter around here all summer from all the bare trees around.
