What is it?

This shrub/tree/whatever is growing in my landscaping. What is it? To keep this tractor related, it's right outside my tractor shed. Seems to grow very fast for a woody type plant.

Cottonwood. The weed of the tree family. On the upside, they grow quickly and are self-pruning when there is a breeze.

That is the largest native tree in Michigan...Cottonwood. Messy tree at best but when they get up to full size they are really something to see. If you ever take the ferry out to S Manitou, there is a huge one of those on the side of the road where you walk down to the docks. I only saw it once and that was three years ago...but I am still impressed.

Cottonwood. Transplant it someplace where you need some shade. I have three in my yard that shade the house. Only bad thing about then is the cotton they put out in late spring, but it doesn't last long.

cottonwood, grow fast, have to wear a rain suit when cutting them, burn like paper when dry.
I developed a piece of property some 20 years ago, dug the power ditch 1/2 mile along the driveway. Asked the wife to mark it with ribbon when backfilled, she used cottonwood sticks, just stuck them in the ground, they're 40 foot tall now.

Thats cottonwood!

Kill it before it grows. Rip it out by the roots. Don't let any seeds get away. Douse it with diesel and burn it to ashes, then bury the ashes. Soak that part of the ground with round up, and maybe salt it.You don't want that thing to grow. That may be something of "overkill" but thats what you want to do. Your sinuses will thank you for it! It will save you and your family from many allergic reactions.

Good fortune!

Scott

cottonwood or wild poplar.
where yours is, it's gotta go, they grow very fast.
I watch for them, and save the ones I can...free trees.
(over the years I've made my open land a forest....I like woods better than lawn....I know real farmers feel much differently about trees)

funny how Nature can do it better. I've planted dozens of hybrid
willows(not as messy as weepers) and poplars. The poplars never survive...that black hole in the trunk thing.
The wild ones that come up always survive with no disease and no care and they are very tough.
making a new trail I dug up the main root of a young wild 15' poplar...tied it upright to the trunk...and told the tree to live or die...it lived and is doing fine...big now.
