On my JD 4030 the temp guage quit working so I changed the sending unit in the head and that didnt help it so I got one of those mechanical guages from napa and put in it and it want work either is there something wrong in the head? When I take it out of the head water comes out so I figured that it was not stopped up and water was getting to the sending unit,is there something that I can do to fix this? I ran it all day and the engine was getting hot like normal.

Put the gauge bulb in a (disposable) tin or pan of water and heat it. If it reads 212 when the water boils Reality is with the thermostat. Jim

How do you know it is really warming up? My VAI will idle for 45 minutes before the guage comes off the cold peg. If I go drive it around with cardboard in front of the radiator it still takes 30 minutes.

I bought a cheap gage at flea market, NOS in the package, just for the heck of it, and boiling water @ 212F reads about 140F. So cheap it deosn't even say "China" on it. Not applicable to you, I realize, but I learned cheap gages are cheap for a reason.
