Hot time in PA

So a series of events led to a bad situation. I had a full tank of gas in the 8n. I was getting the local sledding hill ready to seed after adding many loads of fill and clearing a lot of brush and rubble. Going uphill pulling a drag, gas dribbling out the vent on the gas tank onto the battery, you may be able to guess what happened next. If I could have backed downhill to level ground the gas would have stopped feeding the fire and all would have been well. However , it was not to be. I backed over the drag and stopped still uphill. The results are in the pics. Guess I will have another winter project.

aumn Sam, sorry to see & hear that.

Be GLAD your not burning with the tractor!!!!! IH had several people burnt bad as a result of fuel coming out of the filler cap. Try not to have a full tank of gas when doing this type of work. The tractor can be replaced so Hit your knees and Thank the fellow upstairs as you where not hurt.

bummer
glad you made it away.
(kudos for the cool head, a panicked turn and barrel roll down the hill would have made you part of the fireball)
hate fire....ya just can't fight that red beast in the pic.
a few seconds to see if you can get the upper hand with extinguisher/dirt/water....then run.

You made it away safe which is the most important thing.

As others said, smart thinking helped. Try to turn around or something quick could have put you upside down on the hill.

Boy that's a bad day.

But glad you were smart about it and just let the fire win.

Old tractors are cool and all, but I can't think of a single one that's worth risking serious burns for.

Once the fire got hot enough to start the fuel boiling and perculating out of the fuel tank, it probably would have been a goner even if you could have got it back on flat ground. Sad for your lose, but I'm glad you didn't get injured trying to save it. A trip to the emergency room for burns or an ambulance ride could easily cost more than replacing the tractor.
