Missed old school .This 1931 Ford 68B convertible is said to be one of two modified in 1941 for deep snow mail delivery duty in Montana. It has modified fenders, tractor tires, and a truck differential. If they had built it from a pick-up, this would have pre-dated Bigfoot by 36 years. Find it here at Desert Classics in Butte, Montana for $58k.

Our mail carrier had a Model A sedan. He took the fenders off and put on really big flotation tires (much bigger than the ones in the pic). He could drive over top of the snow drifts with that rig. It wasn't speedy, but it would deliver the mail a couple hours late.

We were at the far end of the county so it took them a week to get out and plow the county roads, but the township roads went unplowed all winter. When I was little, I used to watch for the Model A running the township roads at 10-15 mph, just floating over the top of the drifts.

With tires that big and manual steering you can guess how hard it was! People back then came up with the "snow bird" too. Had an extra axle and tracks. Henry Ford even built a few model "A,s" out of stainless steel. It was a 1930 Delorian of it's day. The steel company who supplied the stainless to ford wanted to use them as like todays show cars for their products. History can be fun.
