Wife has November first week Mayo clinic appointment. Question is should we pull 35 foot fifth wheel or figure on motel. We do have small dog,my concern is freezing weather. Would a so called southern trailer be a real problem that time of year?? What about slick roads for trailer in november? Your advice is appreciated. Bill Wilson

It will be near or below freezing most nights by then and well below freezing is posible. Snow is posible but not too likely yet then.

I'm guessing you are coming to Rochester, MN... or does Mayo have a campus in the Twin Cities now?

At either city, it could be icy, snowy and cold enough to hurt your face and fingers.

But on occasionally in November it can still be nice enough to go golfing... but that's rare November weather.

The year we got married, we got almost 10 inches of snow the first week of November - but that's unusual too.

I'd just plan for a motel if you can afford it - that way if it does get ugly, at least you're not lugging a trailer behind you.

IF coming to Rochester, there are hotels (and restaurants/shops) that are connected to Mayo Clinic by sky-walks and pedestrian subways. Pretty nice if it's cold and rainy.

Might like to use Google Earth and take a look at the area right around Mayo... over the years they have closed a few streets and made it into the Peace Plaza.

Hope your wife gets good results. You will be in good hands - Mayo is a top notch medical facility.

We can usually do fall tillage until Thanksgiving. We do have an occasional early ice and snow. Hard to predict. If you are not comfortable pulling your trailer on "bad roads", caution on the side of safety. Get a room.

You see a few rv's out yet in November for deer hunting season, but as mentioned, November can be a crazy month weather wise. I can remember opening deer hunting days (first Saturday in Nobember) that it was almost -20 sitting on a stand early morning, other years have been t-shirt weather by afternoon. If a hotel is an option, it would be the best way to go so you don't have to worry about the weather. You'll have enough to focus on with your wife's medical care. I always have our fifth wheel camper winterized with antifreeze and parked inside for the winter by the first part of October. I am also 150+ miles north of Rochestor. That makes quite a difference in weather too.

That's deer season here.
So I think back to all my years in the deer stand. I've seen everything from below zero to high 70s so you were warm in the stand and kept nodding off to sleep. Tsk, tsk. And you were worried about the deer your buddy shot yesterday spoiling. Have seen years when we got snow in October that didn't melt till April. Have seen years we didn't get snow till Christmas and the woods was dry and quiet so you could hear deer walking 70 yards away.
Often we don't have snow for the opener (11/6 this year) but usually do by the 3rd weekend. Ground is often frozen an inch or two but some farmers still doing late tillage. The lakes will be booming as they freeze over and shift and crack.
It will almost always drop to freezing at night even if warms up nice in the day.

Not really this bad but I've been looking for a place to use it.

Leave the RV and the dog home with someone and motel it.Between the weather and everything else you will be dealing with, you WILL be glad you did.

Mayo has a clinic in North Phoenix if you are worried about the weather in MN - just saying.

Last time I was in Mn. was Oct. 24/ 09 , ran across an Ebay statement from a tractor eng. I bought 20 miles North of Rochester, just seen the statement a couple days ago. I live top center of Ill.,told the seller I'd be there noon or a little after. Left home about 6:30 in bad fog, called the guy about 10, said might be late in this fog, guy said that's ok got first snow last night, 5 or 6 inches and the ditches were full of cars. Fog lifted when I crossed the Wisc. river to a perfect sunny fall day. Close to Rochester there was couple inches in the grass and chunks on the hiway that fell off of trucks.

Don't bring the RV. Rochester is set up for visitors at Mayo. Tons of hotels/motels near the clinic--at all price ranges. The whole town is pretty well designed around Mayo. The weather? As others have said...the first week in November is usually chilly but not horrible. Might be a little snow but often the first snow is the 2nd-3rd week in November as all the deer hunters will tell you. Even if you brought the RV the nearest RV parks are likely to be on the edge of or out of town.

Most motels have a shuttle service to Mayo. Ask Motel if they offer this service, pick one that does parking around Mayo can be intense

The Mayo Clinic is setup for out-of-state and foreign guests. The clinic should be able to get you some discounts on lodging. I'd leave the trailer and dog at home.

Weather.com and most other weather sites can give you weather averages.

In early November the seasons are changing fast and unpredictably in southern MN. The weather should be mostly dry with average temperatures around 50F for highs and 30F for lows with swings of up to +/- 15F degrees around those averages. Expect frost on cool calm nights (slick bridge decks) but be prepared for possible snow or freezing rain at night that melts by mid-morning.

I would leave the camper at home. the biggest reason is I don't think you will find a campground open in the area for that time of year. Good luck to your wife in Nov.

I would question if you could even find a camp site open at that time of year. Here in Ohio they all close when it gets close to starting to freeze as they have to drain the water supply for the park so it doesn't freeze up on them and burst so it has to be replaced the next year before opening for season. A few will have frost free hydrants so can stay open just for travelers in winter but not many and those would only be on the interstates

Bill, I would drive and find some place to stay. Just the price of fuel and campsite will more than off set the price of a motel. Are you still going this weekend? Keep an eye on weather and pick the nicest day.

Most motels anymore allow pets. We take our Border Collie cross with us about everywhere. Sometimes it costs an extra $10 but well worth it.

We to visit the kids in early January cause that is just how crazy Christmas was.

Went with the grand daughters to their skiing lessons. 30 below windchill.

Other years it has been abnormally warm for there.

You just can't second guess their weather. Just figure on it being nasty.

I quit driving there and just fly in now.
