on new sleeves do you have to hone them...if so will a cheap hone be ok....thanks aiways ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,dewy

All the new sleeves I have installed are already honed in the correct pattern. So just install it and go.

As already reported, the sleeves SHOULD have the correct hone already performed. But even if this is just on a lawn mower, never do a cheap hone.

Wet or dry sleeves? Wet sleeves will be finish honed with the proper cross hatch. Dry sleeves may be finished but you need to check piston clearance after the sleeves are installed in the block as they may shrink or distort when in the block. And yes, get a good hone or have someone who has one do it.

The n series Ford manual states to use a half inch wide shim that is, I think, .002 thick and it is to require a 5 to 10 lb of pull to remove it. Hone if it is too tight.

(quoted from post at 20:48:45 09/05/15) Your new sleeves are clean and after honing they will be dirty, Also you cannot match the precision of the factory procedure

Don't ever assume that new sleeves are clean. Use 10 weight and lint free paper rags to clean them. cheap toilet paper usually works. Repeat until you no longer get any residue from the sleeves. To start with your rag will probably come out gray with remnants from the honing process. Another way yo clean them is with hot soapy water. Blow them dry immediately so they do not have a chance to rust.

If a sleeve needs to be honed after installation to get the proper fit with the piston it must be done with a rigid hone or you will make any out-of-round condition worse.
