Cutting Firewood, 3 More Loads to Go

Finally the end is in site. Needed to replace the 14 Cord of wood that I burned last winter. My son had some time off. Wed. we went to the Fonda Fair, and had a great time with lots of old friends, and today he came up and helped me cut and split firewood. For me, it was the easiest that I have loaded this trailer in many a year. I got to set in the operator seat of the splitter/elevator, and run the lever. My son did all the bull work. Loaded the trailer in record time.
Pics are of the gin pole/winch draging logs up and out of the piles at the landings, rearanging the split wood on the trailer to TOTALLY load it, and the last pic is of all the blocks that we made and left for the next 2 trailer loads.
My son and I had a really great day together.

Your woods look easy to get around over. Here all of the area that is remotely level is in crops. We make hay on some hillsides, Thus my name. Southern Missouri

Now all you need is a woodshed that you can fill with a longer elevator and not have to stack-- like another person showed a couple weeks ago?? Years ago dad and I did that with an old corncrib.

A young back definately is a plus, but my son has herniated discs in his back, so the gin pole on the splitter lifts the big heavy blocks onto the splitter bed. Takes a bit more time, but it is fun playing with big boys toys, when all you have to do is push a button on a remote control.

This woods is dead flat with limestone bed rock for a floor about 0-12" down. Biggest obsticals are the crevices that run north and south.

Holy cowfish ! You folk use a LOT of firewood. Back in the day, I had a woodshed that would take 7 cords, never did use the whole works. Now with the newish heat exchanger system we put in, 2 yr. avg. is 2.5 cords per yr. Hydro costs went from $160. per mo. to $65. per mo. Don't have the time or inclination to cut wood. Delivered to the woodshed - $220. per cord - electric 5T splitter and me = 1 day split and stacked.. Just sayin'

You guys are making good progress at it for sure!!!

I JUST finished up today.... 20 ish cords, we think! Our house, and grannys house next door. I think I did it all by myself this year? Mom did help me one day, but that wasn't very much....

Good on you! GREAT feeling having wood done isn't it?! :)

Case guy, Really neat setup.! Mechanical ingenuity at its best.
Wood heat is truly best for Oil, which makes one LAZY ! !!
Sure enjoy your pictures of you set up. My son is truly a blessing too. Thanks a lot. Warmest regards LOU.

Looks good Loren, now you said you would be able to help me with my firewood next week? Lol, my brother and I have about 10 cords of locust to get from a local golf course pretty soon. It's been in log lengths for the last 2 years since the May 2013 tornado.

Great to see you reap some rewards from the work you did, envisioning what you need to make it as easy as you can in the wood lot, also great to be done too !!!

Don, Yes the beech is dieing here also. Some trees are only 4-6" on the stump. The Ash however seams to be makeing a bit of a recovery.
About a week ago, I noticed a lot of the sugar maple's leaves are turning brown. Not coloring up, but whole trees dieing. For the last 3 years whe have had hords of small millers, about the size of a nickel that eat wholes in all the leaves, and I mean all the leaves in the lower and upper canopy. Contacted Cornell U, and they identified the critters, but said that their damage wouldn't hurt the trees, but it has been really dry here since early July. The damaged trees are not handling this stress well. They said that arial spraying in spring was the only way to control them.

We have a natural gas line right out the front door and we have several appliances hooked to it, including a fireplace. Yes, it is cheaper than fuel oil, but since the wood is already paid for, (taxes) wood is going to be used as long as I am capable of cutting it. No sense in paying for heating the house twice. (chuckle)
