Rusted head and engine

Will hot tanking remove rust from an over head valve engine head and from the valve lifter, tappet, or cam follower area of an engine?

Block and head is from a vertical two cylinder Jd. Water down the exhaust pipe. No carbon build up on either piston, but they are stuck, soaking in atf and acetone.

Have not removed the pan to access rust in lower end. The cam tappet area looks rusty by looking down. Drained 2 quarts of water followed by oil from pan.

Thanks for help or suggestions!

I had a Waukesha from a compressor that was like that. Got it apart and had it hot-tanked. It looked like a new casting. There was some bore damage and I had to have one bore sleeved.

Roger a good hot tank bath will remove any lose rust and get you to bare metal. Things that are rusted tight like a valve in a guide it will not remove the rust. It is sealed so the bath can not get in to work.

If you can find a shop that has the 3 step oven cleaning system you will think you have all new castings. We had both systems, they each have their advantages.

Hot tanking will remove any surface rust, carbon, grease, paint, etc.

But you must disassemble it first. It is not intended to free rust-frozen parts.

It will not fill rust pits or restore missing metal that has eroded away.

I don't want to argue with the other guys and don't know the specific chemistry involved with hot-tanking their castings, but for the castings to be as clean as a couple of guys have said/posted, I'm gonna GUESS the shop bead blasted therm after "cooking" them.

Thanks for the replies below. Plan is to dis=assemble the engine and see what I have. Will also magnaflux head and block before rebuilding.
