Transporting out of Canada

My Nephew has found a tractor in Quebec. He has applied for Passport and is going from VA to Quebec to get tractor. I am sure others have transported across border. What will he expect when He returns to US? Is there tarriffs that will have to be paid? On line it said that if his truck pulling the trailer has extra Fueltank He will have to pay tax on extra fuel He carries.
Thanks for any input you may have.

Those that I know that have bought tractors in Canada and brought into the U.S., had to have a very clean tractor. It can't be contaminated. There probably will be a tariff on the tractor. I don't know about anything else.

If the tractor was US built there shouldn't be a tariff, not sure if it was Canadian built, if it came from Europe or Asia and he can't prove US tariff has been paid on it he'll have to pay the tax. If it's newer he might have to post a bond to guarantee he'll bring it up to US standards. He might want to get information from US customs before he leaves on what's required from the US for entry and Canada for exit, I suspect Canadian customs will want assurance that the tractor is not stolen property

there is no duty or tariff. As Big Ruh stated, tractor must be free of any organic material....no soil, straw, mouse poop, etc. (oil and grease are not an issue)

Make sure that he knows where the serial number is and that it is clean and readable,as for fuel, no tax on extra fuel carried if he is in his personinal truck, commercial carriers pay through IFTA.

No problem as long as it's made in either USA or Canada. Just make sure it is good and clean as others have said.

I live near the US/ Canadian border and I have had some experience with bringing machinery into the US. I would not advise anyone going into the French speaking areas of Canada with a car much less with a truck and trailer. You will be lost and you will get little help from the locals.

There is no problem leaving Canada but it will be with the US customs. They may require you to use a import broker and that means a fee so inquire ahead. My advice would be to have the tractor brought to the US before you load it. Even if you have a passport the Canadian border inspectors will run a background check on you and any passengers and if you have any kind of a bad record [DWI or minor conviction] they will not let you enter their country

same as the others..might have to have intra statedot numbers on your truck, within weight limits, good binders, well secured load, good tires all around & over the road fuel in your truck....this is the most importanat as they check at least transpo cops in quebec..have road maps, aphone number to call & of course if in quebec speak french..it helps greatly & while there visit around sights where ya going...Eastern twp, granby!?
