can one of you tell me how to take apart my mf 50 generator so i can replace the brushes? i have added more info on another request, i am not sure how to reply directly to an answer to my question, i am new at using this forum and have not learned all the ins and outs yet. thanks ron

I would have it rebuilt by some one that does it professionally. There are lots of things to look at other than just replacing brushes when you
have one apart. New brushes may not fix a problem if the commutator is worn or is filled in between the copper strips or if they're wore down
where it needs to be replaced. The end bushings can be worn or the armature needs to be tested for a short to ground and may need to be replaced. All this items I mentioned can cause a generator not to charge.

You can take the end cap off the generator to get to the brushes to replace them but getting it back together can test your ability.

John B gave the right information but did not answer your question. It is a 10 minute job.

1. mark location of wires so you can install when finished.
2. Remove generator from tractor.
3. Mark orientation of end caps.
4. take out ((2)long bolts
5. Remove cap opposite the pulley
6.Remove screws connecting field to end cap
7. Take out old brushes assuming you were able to get the correct replacement ones.
8. Put a dab of grease in the bushing of the end cap.
9. make some hooks from wire to hold the brushes away from the commutator.
10. attach field wires you removed in step 6
11 attach end cap
13. Replace long bolts
12. Remove wires holding brushes back
13. Reinstall generator

I answered your question but you should follow John's advice. A mechanic is worth his charges. A mechanic may take longer than 10 minutes but he will do more once he has it apart
