Correct hydraulic fluid?

My JD 1020 is low on hydraulic fluid. I found this "universal" fluid at Tractor Supply; label on back says it can be used in place of JD HyGard and JD 303. Is this OK for my tractor?

It will work in a JD 1020 but I would NOT use it in a powershift JD. I have seen failures from using Travelers brand fluids on them.

I don't know about that one,, use it for a year and tell us if your brakes came apart...my guess is they will...there are other fluids that work out well in Deere wet brakes and about the only way of knowing is to try it,,I don't like that kind of gamble..I would like to compile a list of those fluids that do work..My Bros. have been using a BP trans oil for 20 years that seems okay

In theory but....

I put all new brakes in my JD4320 filled it with that oil and had to do the brakes all over again in a matter of months. That time I went with official JD oil. However, I redid the brakes on my 4430 and filled it with whatever the oil is in the yellow pail from TSC and it's still going.

I would not use it. The difference in price is not enough to cover a repair later. Also, sometimes even a good quality oil is not compatible with other oil. I know not all oils work well with Deere Hy-Gard. I know Shaeffer oil and Deere do not play well together. Years ago I saw brand new brake facings fully deteriorate in a week's time when the Shaeffer oil was added to the Hy-Gard (this was on a 4430). The owner complained of the brakes chattering. The axle housings were removed and the brake pads inspected. They were gone. Not a trace of them left. The rivets were still there but the pads no longer existed. You either pay now or pay later.
