Case question

I have an 1150 case dozer. 1983 model. I replaced the non-working water temperature gauge with a generic one. After a few hours of use the gauge will show a temp of around 220 degrees at which point I stop and let it cool back to about 190 or so and continue on. My question is. What is the normal operating range for this dozer?

Just a straight 1150? Not an 1150C/D(which it would be by 1983)?

Does it have pencil injectors that go in the top of the engine(injector pump left side), or stubby ones that go in the right(pump on right side)?

I have never been around a pencil injector Case that you could get to go above 180 or so unless something was wrong.

I agree with RGMartin: That is not normal. I would get a good Inferred thermometer and check and see what temperature your actually at on the motor. You can have plugged radiator that would heat it up that high but I would really rule out a defective temp gauge first.

It is an 1150D. I will look again but I'm pretty sure the injectors or the old style with pump on the right.

Coolant temp range is REALLY not a model/brand-specific thing.

No matter who made the darned thing, if the coolant is not boiling you have not overheated it and are not going to hurt it.

Has the coolant ever boiled when you have worked it?

Even if it gets to the boiling point, the engine ain't gonna be hurt. Overheating damage occurs beyond that point, when coolant is lost.

Thanks. That"s kinda how I felt about it. That is one thing I have monitored closely by sight and smell is whether or not it is boiling over. I have not added more than a gallon of water to the radiator in the weeks I have been using it. I also keep the radiator blown out. So I"m going to continue on and just monitor closely. Thanks for all the replies. That"s what makes this website so valuable.
