an old tractor pulling all the bottoms it's rated for when it hit's tight soil and governor come's in without so much as a belch. Seat of the pants feel of her squating is kinda nice also.
What sound perk's you up?

We just came back from rant oil il and you would love to see and hear a nice variety of big and small power under load what a great show

I hate to admit it but the best sound I like is the IH 1466 open station pulling her heart out hour after hour. I have ran that tractor a lot of hours plowing, then chisel plowing and disking. That IH 436 motor just purred with power. The old girl does not get used much anymore as it is an open station. I did put it on the chopper 2 years ago just to blow the soot out of her. The old girl just walked right along. SWEET sound.

The next closest one I like to here is a JD 4320 working hard. The just where smooooth sounding. LOL

The 2 steel wheelers at my brothers farm have distinct sounds
1929 Wallis 12-20 that came to the farm brand new in 1929 sweet sound
Distinct crisp exhaust ( sounds like shes got a cam in her)
1924 Hart Parr 16-30 it may be green and have 2 cylinders
but it aint no Deere
We had the Hart Parr on a thresher for the threshing mill
world record setting at St Albert Ontario August 16
( 111 thresher operating at the same time )

anything starting easily and coming to life on a below zero morning , for one// , the sound of grain going thru a empty combine and hitting the floor of the graintank ,,,but if you want exhaust sounds ,, My 429 mercury Marquis convertible does have a nice rumble ,,. and the DC Case leaning into a hard pull, and not givin a inch , is a thrill.

Model 17 Stagerwing Beachcraft with a Wright radial.
Offenhauser indy 4 cyl is also quite goose bump generating. Jim

An 8.1 Deere. Ain't no better sounding engine. As if the 8X10 Deere tractors weren't awesome to begin with. Listen to one at start up, and you'll fall in love all over again.

A 1957 Kenworth conventional with a 275 Cummins pulling Donner Summit Ca.on a cold winters night with the passengers side window down about 6 inches, nothing prettier sounding than that.

Modified tractor pulling, nothing better than 4 or 5 engines under load with open exhaust, but even when ideling they sound sweet.

How about a 454 Chevy with a nice pair of headers and glasspacs turning about 3,000 rpm and working just a little bit?

2.4 liter, 650 HP V-8s pulling to 18,000 rpm in Formula one race cars. Due to changes in the rules, never to be heard again. :-(

The most amazing engine sound I've ever heard.

A cold started loping Detroit diesel, my two cylinders pulling through a low spot plowing and a truck with the perfect mix of straight pipes and engine brake rolling into town.

Rumleiy Oil Pull
Lanz Bulldog at idle
stean engine under load
all very unique and total differnt
can listen to them all anytime

It's impossible to choose just one. Personally I like the sound of an old Detroit, an old Murphy diesel in a dragline as it hits the governor, and just about any of the radial aircraft engines. All are music to the ears......

In the late 50's we live over a mile and a half from the highway and in the evening in the winter while doing chores would listen for the big trucks shifting down. Love to hear them start pulling down and shifting, then picking up speed and shifting up. Always wondered what they had for a engines because there is no shifting now. I bet truck driving was interesting then.

I like tractors and engines, but a farrowing barn full of sows nursing is my favorite farm sound.

My 2-53 JD 435 cracking the gov just before the weight box comes up far enough to load her. I can feel it in my chest!. Also the Jake brake on my old M11 Cummins coasting down the last exit ramp coming home.

An old Fairbanks-Morris engine running an oil well back in a Appalachian holler when I'm squirrel hunting. Putt-putt-putt-bang! putt-putt-putt-bang!

The sound of the P51's that flew over the farm, from the Air National Guard out of Fargo.

We have mostly woods around us, I love to hear the Pileated Woodpeckers and the Barred Owl just outside the window.

Total silence when wife and I are sitting looking out the shop doors in the summer or sitting by the big shop heater in the winter.

The sound of a Harley when idling

"Potato Potato Potato Potato"

QUESTION FOR HARLEY OWNERS: Is that because of two cylinders mounted on a common crank throw one firing then the other????

The straight piped, turned up farmall 1206 my neighbor used to have, from a distance. On the seat, it'd make your ears ring. Still bothers me I missed out on it.

Yup, the sound of a tractor working hard in the field. I have always since the early 1950's loved the sound of the Oliver 77 on the baler. The steady surge of the plunger making the governor keep up with the with the balers pull.

Either a Rolls Royce Merlin or Griffon in an unlimited hydroplane, an Allison in a P-51, the big radial in a Grumman Hellcat or P-47 Thunderbolt, John Deere G at a tractor pull, really pulling down low where you can pick up the individual cylinders firing.

Oh god...I have no idea where to start.

Any 2 lung John Deere under a load
Grandpa's Farmall M with a 3 foot tall straight pipe
An old Harley Shovelhead
A big cammed up Mopar Big Block running all out.
Waylon Jennings pickin on his Telecaster

I could go on and on.

Any gasoline engine woumd up so it sounds like an aircraft only running on land. Any high perf motor sounds late at night. I should live near a race track.

High yielding small grins coming into the clean grain elevator on my CASE combines and the "Growl" you get when you are feeding at 95-100% capacity

All of the answers are good one but the sound of a old two banger working late at night. It is too bad this just isn't something we hear anymore. Every spring as a kid I could remember the neighbor (John Keller) plowing late at night.

I just completed a 2000 Hr. inspection on a General Electric 15,000 Hp. J79 / Lm1500.
Check out:
"Test Cell Services S&S Turbine" on Google and play the video.....I spend time there when these guys are short a Tech, or ask for a Rolls Royce Spey experienced mechanic.
These guys (S&S Services) supplied the Engine for AMERICAN EAGLE II

how about a very light rain hitting a hot tractor muffler or the sound of an old A jd square baling tough hay in the evening.

The straight piped 350 Chev engine in my 510 Massey working heavy swaths with the governor opening up and cutting back all day long was hard to beat. Sounded better on the outside. Those days are long gone but nowadays its the sound of the flathead V8 in the 52 Merc when I kickdown the Mercomatic from third to second and wind it up a little. Doesn't make much speed or power but it sure sounds good trying!

This video (hemi sound link below) does a good job capturing the sound I love the most - if you've got a good sound system - turn it up to "real" volume.

Then wait for 1:03...

man.

I love the idle, but that sound of purely insane speed... I wish he kept the pedal down longer, but - I get it, city streets.

I think the ONLY thing I'd rate any higher than that is an f15 with afterburners ripping by a few hundred feet over head.

But THAT sound's so good it's almost impossible to capture on video - the volume is a big part of it.

Lots of valve timing overlap. Drag race engines share that. Old stove bolt 6 cyl engines with some overlap and split exhust are very close since they can idle fairly slow.

I can think of several things:

As someone else mentioned, a steam locomotive, especially just starting out (sssssssit - - chuff)

The sound of the hydraulic jack letting something down after getting it fixed.

Tractors with GOOD (low tone) mufflers that fall into an even, perfect, low idle with a half roll start is smile worthy, as well as when the governor opens and makes them bark.

The sound of a walking plow turning earth behind a team.

Walking the woods in early summer with the birds singing and squirrels rustling the leaves looking for last year's nuts, or scaring up a deer.

Best of all: the soft sounds of a barn full of hooved critters on good bedding, breathing, and eating (and pooping), and just being well content. I've been known to just stand and listen for a few when barn chores are done.

2 cyl Deere working hard
.....all tractors working hard...especially a sudden load...hard spot,etc

old V8 car/truck with headers and lots of overlap..idling

any drag car going down the strip(muscle car doorslammers best)

nitro funny car.....primal roar that seems to come from everywhere...

big Harley...idling, and also rolling on the throttle without downshifting to pass or climb a rise.

The wrrrrroooom-sound from the combine engine when we get to the spot in the field where it yields twice as much as in the rest of the field.
