Three older sisters live across the road from me, all up in age. I got a call from one this morning. She said there is a snake on our patio, all coiled up. My first thought was rattle snake. I was right. This was big snake all coiled up. I slid a shovel under it, and into a garbage can it went. After my grand daughter and the rest of the family got to see, and hear it. I relocated it down on the road by a small creek, away from any houses. Not many years ago it would have been a dead snake. I figured he had right to live also. It is against the law here in California to kill a rattle snake. Stan

Why would it sit still while you scooped it up? My sister in Arizona has had several encounters with rattlers, she said they move very fast when threatened.

"It is against the law here in California to kill a rattle snake"

So are rattle snakes endangered in California or is it against the law to kill any kind of snake?

I will kill a poisonous snake (cottonmouth) in fear if I let it go today I may step on it and get bitten tomorrow.
Saw what I think was a orange corn snake just yesterday. Might have escaped captivity from a neighbors house as I have never seen one in my area before.

As Per CA Dept of Fish & Game:

"Although you may legally kill or remove rattlesnakes, try to make your environment less hospitable to
them instead, or the problem will likely continue. Remember, all native snakes are part of the ecosystem
and are beneficial – gopher snakes eat rodents, and the beautiful kingsnake actually kills and eats
rattlesnakes"

That is what I have learned around any snake. They usually don't hang around long. It was one fast scoop. The snake didn't have time to react. He was all coiled up. I am glad the grand daughter had a chance to see, and hear the snake. when she is out on her horse she will stay clear if she hears, or seas mr snake.Stan

All coiled up is the position that they strike from. I am glad that I moved out of California, I wouldn't want to break the law.

I was working in the garden last summer and I saw a huge black snake! i about jumped outta my socks,...then I realised it was the soaker hose
