Synthetic oil

my wife bought some oil and accidentally bought full synthetic. Can I just dump this into my car at the oil change? I heard that synthetic and Dino don't mix well. I have been running conventional the whole time.

No issue at all. Change the filter and all is good. They would be facing radical issues if they were impossible or inappropriate to mix. Getting the best out of the synthetic means getting as much as will drain and a filter change. If the engine is leaking oil now, it may leak a bit more. Jim

How would adding premium quality oil to the vehicle wreck it ?

It used to be an issue with the ancient glycol based synthetics. I don't think anyone has made a glycol based synthetic for 30 years or more. Someone please correct me on this if I am wrong.

I am certainly not an authority but a retired certified mechanic.
Many discussions about this and I have read many.
It is MY opinion that full synthetic oil is not what it was a few years ago.
Back then, you were cautioned about mixing synthetic and mineral oil after app. 12K miles.
The different oils had different "oil swell" properties and changing, or mixing, could cause oil leaks.
Today, I don't think there would be a problem--but I wouldn't take the chance for the price of a can of oil.
FWIW--I use petroleum oil, my type driving doesn't justify the higher price of Synthetic when I can get 2 to 3 hundred thousand miles on late model engines with no issues using quality petroleum oil.

I think today you will find that most synthetic oils sold in the US have a petroleum base. The main difference is the uniform size of the molecules in the synthetic oils.
