I see Japan has launched another of their new specialized helocopter carriers.
The Kaga - "increased joy"
As you may remember, Kaga was the name of one of the Japanese air craft carriers that attacked Pearl Harbor.
We sank her at Midway 6 months later.
It's interesting to see them reusing famous old ship names though Kaga is a provence in Japan.
I for one have increased joy to see Japan picking up a greater share of their defense requirements.
Especially with China and N Korea flexing their muscles.

It *is* an interesting name choice, all things considered. Hopefully, after decades, they still remember how to build a good ship.
They certainly could fund their own defensive requirements and seem to be moving in that direction.
 
After WW2 it was ageed by treaty that Japan could only build a big enough army to defend itself and not build big enough to attack other nations [ A good idea after Pearl Harbor]. China has more grunts in its infantry than we have citizens . China could overrun Japan in a matter of days.

1. Japan is a nation of islands and helicopters are invaluable for patrol, law enforcement and disaster relief.
2. A solid defense industry is a job creator and critical to a nation's economy.
3. It shows other markets a nice product that Japan will certainly build for them for the right price.

You are correct that China has a huge army.
But they have to get the army across the pond and then support them with food and equipment before they can overrun Japan "in just a few days."
There might be a chance to whittle them down a bit before they reach the shore.

The logistics needed to invade someplace like Japan is amazing! Unless they control the sea not only would they have to have a tremendous number of cargo and transport ships but enough combat ships to screen them from surface, subs and air. Today the subs don't even have to be close, nor do they have to use a periscope. They can launch homing or guided torpedoes from many miles away and or sub surface launched guided missiles over hundreds of miles. Carrier and land based aircraft can be stationed and launched thousands of miles away. The Chinese are not stupid. With a 6 million man army mostly trained to keep the people in line they can be a threat but they lack the naval force to launch a land invasion as long as we would stand by Japan.
