Tractor show

I don't normally make OT posts like this bit I will today.

I went to the Portland show today and about 100 miles we got behind another truck and trailer with a homemade garden tractor. The seat cushion had bounced off of the trailer and was sitting on deck of trailer against binder holding tractor on. We lost track of that truck, but about ten minutes from the show I saw the seat cushion sitting in the middle of the road. I stopped and picked it up hoping I could find the guy at the show and give it back.

About halfway through the show I finally saw the tractor and an older gentleman sitting on a 6x6 across the seat frame. I stopped and told him I had his seat cushion in the back of my truck. My brother had already found him and was walking to the truck to get it for him so I stayed there with him until my brother got back.

After talking to him I found out today was his 100th birthday. He couldn't believe we had found the seat and tracked him down to give it back. It was great talking to him. He was still very sharp and not too hard of hearing.

That was definitely my favorite part of the show today.

That is NEAT! When I went to get my CUB it has the delux bench seat. You guessed it, the cushion flew off. Lucky of a guy blowing his horn that the other driver pulled over and picked it up.

Your good deed came back to you more than you expected. I bet you were thrilled when you helped that elderly gent.

This week has been a rough week for me and that really helped getting to meet somebody like that and making his day better too.

That's good stuff, a long time friend, at their pistol league, befriended a very highly educated and accomplished man, who worked on the Manhattan Project, very interesting dialogue, interview, private conversation etc., there's an article in the local paper, (see link below). He lives in this town, and frequents the long time dairy bar across the road, I never knew who he was. My friend had a "blast" speaking with him about various things, I hope to meet him myself. He had some interesting and significant facts about things related to the events that occurred in the war.
WWII

I attended S.U.N.Y. Delhi for the Engineering Science program and one of my professors was Dr Richards(great guy, extremely smart) for physics. IIRC he was working on his Masters degree during WWII and had to start several times as his overseeing professors were assigned to the Manhattan Project. I also took Atomic Physics with him as professor and he was one of the authors of the text book.

I used to ski with an older gentleman, I think he was 79 at the time, and we would make the 1 1/2 hour
drive together with him telling all the history of the area along the way, great stories. He skied until
he was about 90 and stopped only because his eyesight was failing, I kept in touch until he moved across
the country where family could help in his old age. The last I knew about a year ago he was still alive
and he would be about 105 now. Every spring our local little paper posts something about him for his
birthday. He is in a home now and still wishes to hear from old friends on the east coast. And yes, we
have sent him letters.

Small world, RPI is still one of the top engineering schools, my friend says he's sharp as a tack. I've seen him around, had no idea who he is though. Incredible, the knowledge he possesses.
