Big expensive mistake, senior monent

I filled up my terramite with gas. One hour later I noticed gas running the fill cap running on the ground. I wiped off the tank only to discovered I put 2 gallons of gas in the wrong tank, put it in hydraulic oil tank. There goes 10 gallons of new hydraulic oil, 10w40. I also noticed 3 hydraulic cylinders leaking. Sure hope I don't have to rebuild all the cylinders.

The oil and gas tank look the same, on different sides of tractor. You can bet I'm going to color code the caps on each tank.

Plan to drain when oil cools off. Add new oil and flush it out. Only problem you can empty tank, but there will still be about 2 gallons in hoses, cylinders, pump and torque motor.

Got any ideas what I can do with 10 gallons of oil and 2 gallons gas besides using it to start a brush fire?

Need to get as much of the gas out as possible. Can you disconnect the hoses, move the attachments through their motions to blow as much out as you can? If there is a return filter, could remove it, start it up, let it purge, then put in just enough cheap oil to flush the lines and pump. Any way to drain the hydrostat motors?

No drain on new torque motor. Going to call terramite tomorrow morning and figure which hose is the return line to tank. Remove that hose, fill with new oil and then purge all the lines, cylinders, motor and pump. Hope the gas doesn't do damage to o-rings and seals.

Parts manual shows some of the oil returning to the tank goes through the filter. What if I remove the hose going to the filter and put that oil in a bucket? Think that will help purge lines and cylinders? Go to page 18 of manual.

Don't feel bad I did about the same thing. I put 5 gallons of gasoline in my JD diesel tank. The only difference was, I noticed it was running a little hotter than usual. In a few weeks I was taking the pump in to be rebuilt. Stan

You'll probably be OK on the oil seals,my dad was running the AC 180 and told me that night that oil was coming out of the dip stick. The fuel pump had gone bad and was pumping
gas into the crank case,I drained it changed the filter put in new oil(and a new fuel pump) and it ran fine.Probably have the cleanest AC 180 engine around. That was 20 years ago and its still going strong.

Don't kick yourself too hard. Some of the Case skid loaders have the same arrangement with fill caps and the same mix ups. Diesel fuel is not good hydraulic fluid.

Gas and oil will go BOOM. Went on a service call where a person mixed gas with his
diesel fuel, oil furnace. Furnace went boom

I remember seeing a WW2 movie where the tanks ran out of fuel. I think they drained the oil out of a damaged tank, mixed a little gas. It worked in the movies, not sure about the real world.

If you want it, you can have it.

Might make a good weed killer. Bet it will kill termites too. Fill a mole run with it, light a match, and see what happens.

I need to find some cheap oil, use it for a short while and drain.

I put 4 gallons in, had filter lose so oil wouldn't return to tank. Ran it and operated some cylinders before it lost pressure. Drained again.

I had one leaky cylinder, not two more are leaking. Plan to work those over before filling and flushing. This could get expensive. I have stocked some oil that was on sale for $2/qt. Have enought for a fill up. Will need more.

Cousin from Germany spent a Summer with us 20 years ago, was helping out running the JD 40 and loader when he ran it out of gas. The loader hoses ran over the hood obscuring the fuel cap- so he poured the gasoline into the other cap on the hood- the radiator cap (must have stopped for lunch in between to let it cool down). Fun trying to clean a gallon of gasoline out of the radiator and engine once I figured out why it would not start after adding the gas. Just glad he and Grandpa (mid-nineties by then) did not try to add even more!

I burn old gas and diesel in my waste oil furnace all the time . It's usually mixed pretty good with oil from my big tank. Thin mixture does not like to pump that good . Black Gold furnace .

Hopefully you caught it early enough to prevent damage. Senior or not and I'm one this stuff happens to even the most careful

A year or two back I was over at Dad's and was going to use his Super H for raking or shredding or something. It was low on fuel so I put five gallons of gas in it. Noticed it was smoking a bit and I was thinking, Man this thing didn't smoke at all last time I saw it run.

Turns out I had poured five gallons of diesel in it! Dad had put diesel in all the fuel cans for something else. Oops!

Anyone near Terre Haute want used oil/gas? I plan to go to rural king this morning and buy 6 cases of their $1.79/qt oil and flush the system a few times. Need to pick up filters too. Going to call terramite and see what they recommend too.

I did this on a pressure washer some years back, gas in the oil. Didn't flush it well enough and ruined the rod bearing.
