Rebuilding Westendorf f cyclinder

I bought a used loader and now I am trying to rebuild a tilt cylinder on a WL-40 loader. The snap ring is broken (both eyes are broken off) behind the piston, or top plate. Any ideas on how to get the cylinder apart? From my understanding, once the snap ring is loose the piston should come out, but since the snap ring is behind the top plate I am unsure how to remove the snap ring. Thanks for any advice.

if the snap ring is below the outside edge of the packing gland you have to drive the packing gland into the cylinder barrel enough to remove the snap ring once removed the gland, rod and piston come out together,on the set-up I'm referring too the snap ring has the ends tapered instead of eyes as there isn't room for them inside the recessed between the gland and cylinder barrel

I've rebuilt that style before but never had the snap ring break like that. The snap ring is in a groove in the gland with an access notch to reach in and compress the ring. The gland and snap ring then slide out together. May try torching the snap ring a little at a time but probably will have to sacrifice the gland. It is a poor design, especially if they get rusty/corroded.
