Ford Flex.....Good/Bad

Looking at some Ford Flex Suv's. Old knees act up when getting into and out of regular cars. These flex's seem to be quite good. Opinions ???

Is that square boxy looking unit ? If so, there are 2 around here. Kinda like a smaller suburban.
There are more Ford and Chevy small SUV's.

My sister bought one brand new in 14' I believe. she takes trips to north Carolina(from north central ohio) regularly ,has a lot of bells and whistles ,good mileage and has been reliable and trouble free, nice ride quality. pretty peppy too I might add , for what it is.

My daughter bought one new, I can't remember what year. She lives in the Kansas City area, and that car has been relatively trouble free. In my opinion, it is one ugly car, but when you get inside it is wonderful.

I was talking to the Ford Dealership guy. His wife had the pick of what she wanted to drive, she would only drive the Flex. She liked the ride.
As I recall he said it had full frame like a truck. Please check that comment as this was a while ago. Anyway, she liked the good stable ride. I suspect it would have good crash ratings also but again, check that at the gov't site.
Yes, it would not be my first choice appearance wise but it grows on you a little if you know it has all these good qualities.

The Country Squire lives!!!!
First one I saw, I said to myself, that is a 1960s station wagon that has been brought up to date, modernized, and sold as a new model.

They are built extremely well. I work at a body shop and have fixed a few and I cant believe how well they put together they are as compared to almost everything else built today. I would buy one!

I've worked @ this Ford store for 41 Years. Have seen some good & not so good units pass through
these doors. At first sight of the Flex I thought what were they thinking? The design of a cement
block on wheels.... I drove one, that alone sold me. We've done very little warranty repair to them.
I think one has a tranny shift concern & another Power Seat track. I don't have many repair parts
in the parts to fix one, haven't figured out what fails. We've only replaced a few sets of rear brakes.
I waiting for a good used one to come in.

No full frame. It's a "crossover" unibody construction borrowed from the Ford Fusion, shortened a bit and jacked up. Front while drive standard, all wheel drive optional. I like them but I don't understand why its so heavy compared to the longer car version.

My mistake - its based on the Taurus platform - not the Fusion. Its a heavy vehicle too - 4,400 pounds. For comparison the big old heavy Crown Vic with a full sized frame and V8 weighed 4000 pounds and the current Taurus weighs in at 3,900.

I was thinking of the Ford Edge - its based on a Fusion platform but shorter and for some reason weighs in nearly 600 pounds more than the fusion.

Hey! I know a guy named Fletch; he would be highly insulted if you named a Ford after him!

Thanks ever so much folks! Very qualified answers from you who have owned or worked on these cars. Will go talk turkey at the car lot! Thanks again!

I look at that thing and all I can think is it's FORD'S answer to G M's Aztec! I've heard from several people that it's a pretty good car though.

you are correct

Flex is Taurus based (so is the Explorer by the way)

Edge is Fusion based <-- i don't get the Edge market. Not all that big and is a gas guzzler (at least the older ones were)

Escape is now Focus based but there are alot of versions of that platform.

We thought about a Flex to replace the mini-van... bought a Cherokee instead (good deal) but its not anywhere close to being as useful space wise.. but the flex doesn't get 32mpg (no trailer) and still handle a 4000lbs trailer (not a typeo that's what they are rated for with factory towing).

Exactly. My first thought when I saw one was, "That looks like an updated '66 Country Squire".
