Alternater Failure

Delco 2 plug was working fine , only reading .4 volts on my meter at engine idle . Do I need to increase RPM to excite it to charge .?

I deserve that Bob --L.O.L. didn't think of reving it up until I got home tonight , just a question for tomorrow when I get back working on it.

Where are you taking your voltage reading?

The output wire terminal and the #2 terminal should have battery voltage on them at all times. The #1 terminal should have no voltage with the switch off and depending upon how the alternator is wired it could be anywhere fro about 4 volts up to battery voltage with the switch on. If you are really seeing only .4 volts on the output terminal or #2 terminal you have a dead battery or a wiring problem.

I have 2 alternators that won't work at low rpm's. Rev the engine full throttle, wait a
few seconds and mine work at lower rpm's. Wake them up or take them back to be tested.
