MH44 tuning day 3

I adjusted the valves tonight, they were mostly just a little tight. Another 2 hours on dyno, governor is wide open, no difference with oil bath on/off. I am going to bore the throttle body next and install bigger plate. I will see how that goes. I am going to pull the engine this winter and fix a rear main leak, so might change cam then. The good news is the hard running seems to be seating the rings.

I guess the big change I am seeing is that there is a ton of low end torque, but total HP has not increased. I would love to run this against a carbuerated 44 on all the RPM ranges, that would really tell the differences. I might put the carb back on at some point and log those readings.

This is interesting enough to warrant a youtube video if you have the ability. Cool stuff, I've seen some other projects to do this kit on like old IH v8's, but never an inline continental with updraft. Awesome project.

It currently has a single injector midway up on the manifold. I have drilled the manifold so I can install an injector pointing directly into the intake port on the head. I have to put the distributor back in for that and make it a cam sensor. A single injector does not care where in the 720 degree cycle you are, dual injectors need to know that.

So I am guessing JD left the Dyno with you then or did you buy it from him??

I'm curious to know what is the compression PSI, was the head milled? I have the 44 puller that a friend had years ago, head has been milled to where the two 3/8 studs at the front of the head casting is about 1/8 inch thick. He took out the governor, I want to put it back in. Engine has been balanced, he ran it 3000 to 3500 RPM with the Isky cam that's in it. Wish I had the spec card, hope to check the cam when I replace the governor weights.

Does the Nebraska Tractor test for MH44 include some tests at reduced speeds or with overloads that pull down engine RPM? In later years the Nebraska Tractor Tests included that information.

I do not know, but mine fell off pretty quick when I hit the 40s on HP.

I am going to change out the throttle plate

Just glad you guys are making it worth the while of him coming down and getting it and for what he payed for it.

It is perfect sized for the smaller tractors.

I am trying to get 10 hours of work on the 44 to get rings seated good. It does make me nervous, as I have never gone through the bearings in the transmission. It is a little noisy, so will probably work on that this winter.

Not uncommon for the bearing in them to make a lot of noise plus the straight cut gears do not help either. The transmission in the 30 and 4 and a few others are pretty much the same and I do have both a 44 and parts of a 30 here I'd sell

Very interesting, I am surprised that the HP numbers are not higher.

Do you have an O2 sensor if yes, what does it show in terms of A/F ratio or excess oxygen?

Maybe you do not have enough fuel?

Thanks
Rich
