OT:Ram truck buy back....tempting...

All,

I thought I needed a diesel 4x4 stick shift. Turns out I rarely need the power, although I often use the 4x4, and am wanting an auto.

So, what to do? I am thinking about trading in the truck and getting a gas 3/4 ton 4x4.

How bad is my truck de-valued due it being a stick? Cummins, 6 speed, posi rear end. No great interior package, but not bad either.

I know I'm probably calling on the thunder of truck wars, but if you could, keep this civil.

lease let us know how the buy back offer goes. My bet is that it will be so bad that you will pass on it.

I won't get in a brand war,but after 23 years with a diesel,I went to a gas 3/4 ton 4x4. The last gas I had was carbureted. The newer gassers are a different animal than the old ones were.

Check Kelley Blue Book www.KBB.com, www.NADAguides.com or Edmunds www.Edmunds.com . The amount to add or subtract for options often get smaller for older vehicles.

Cummins with a stick seems to carry a premium around these parts, just not a ton of them around so people have to wait and usually pay more when they find them (likely sick of waiting and looking).

Where I live a guy has a hard time finding anything that is stick shift an they bring 25% more then a auto does and add 4X4 that brings it up even more

I think you will get more for a stick then the auto. In Western PA anyone with oil and gas money wants a stick and then wants to dump a ton of money into them.

The stick will bring $1000-1500 MORE around here. They are more desirable for heavy pulling. The guys with autos are having to dump $3-4K in them at 150-200K when the auto grenades. I was kind of looking a year or so ago and I could find 10 to one auto over stick. The sticks where usually sold before I could get to look at them. So do not let a dealer talk you down on price because of the stick shift.

Like everyone else, what is it. I would sure enough trade my 2012 auto, back in for a manual!!!!!

The problem with a stick is your pool of fish is limited... I am getting old and ornery a stick is to much work... I have one truck with a stick it works for its keep. Its working are it sets there is no pleasure riding, I do my pleasure riding in a auto....

A repair on a stick/clutch is not cheap either...

Correct you are on that one, the newer gas trucks have plenty of power for most jobs. However, the same goes for diesels. The newer diesels make the ones from 20 years ago look sound and feel prehistoric.

I agree with what some others have said, the manual transmission brings a premium where I'm at. You should have no trouble dealing it off. You may even be better off to sell it outright than to trade it in.

Check your local Craigs List to see what a truck like yours is going for.

You should get a premium price for it - I sold my '05 Dodge 2500 SLT 4x4 in January of this year for pretty much the reason you gave and got 2 grand more than what they were listing autos of the same or even newer for. It was on Westslope Craigslist for less than 48 hrs. BUT I could have got another grand, at least, if I was selling it now BUT I didn't sell it 'cause I needed the money; just getting to be time for me to 'cut back' a little. Oh well....TIME, as they say, MARCHES ON'. I've got a 1/2 ton w/gas V/8, 4x4 and an auto tranny, now BUT I still miss 'BIG RED'!

Where I am at a stick will bring several thousand dollars more than a auto truck in any year model dodge diesel. If you want to get rid of it I would sell it outright. You would come out ahead doing that more so than trading with a dealer.

If your not towing alot or heavy probably be OK you'll lose some mpg though regardless of what some peoples overhead computer claims

All,

It appears that I have to answer my own post.

Truck 2010, 4 door but not a mega cab. 6.5 foot bed. Driven by me and the little lady, both experienced stick-shifters. Rust-proofed from Ziebart from day one. We live on gravel so there are some chips in the paint.

I hauled several pallets of sod about 15 miles (one on the truck, a few on the trailer). That's the heaviest I've loaded this wagon. It's got about 26K on it. Has a few recalls, regular fuel filter and oil changes.

Someone asked where I'm at, let's say due east of the Minneapolis area, plus or minus a few miles. I still need to see what trade-in or buy-out value is before I get too far into selling it. Or even more important, what's the cost of a new replacement.

I was wondering how badly the stick shift would damage the value. Sounds that given the right person, it may not. Looks like I may need to seek an audience outside the metro area, perhaps those that prefer to drive sticks are in the "rural" areas...
