John Deere 6420 engine skipping

Got a 6420 green and yellow lemon that seems to have an injector pump problem. It starts when cold and runs smoothly at a low idle. Try to speed it up and it sounds like a 2 banger. The tractor shuts itself off sometimes. Shut it off and restart and put it under load may make it run smoother. It runs better as it warms up. It skips anywhere as long as a half hour down to 2 minutes before it runs smoothly. We always have to restart the tractor for it to run smoothly. This is a great running tractor once the engine stops skipping. Any ideas or similar stories?
Thank You hoader

You did not say how many hours it has on it. IF it is over 3500-4000 and you have not been running fuel conditioner you are more than likely needing new injectors. These are electronically fired. They are not very durable. They need the extra lubrication of using a fuel conditioner. I have had to replace several sets of them in JD 6420s with around 3-4K on the hour meter. The fellows that use conditioner regularly are getting 6-7K out of the injectors. Now the real bad news your looking at around $2500-3000 to replace the injectors. You will more than likely need the harness too and that is another few hundred.

The longer you keep running it the more likely you are of burning a hole in piston. When they get bad they blow a straight stream of fuel right down the middle of the piston. I have seen 3-4 have piston failures for this reason.

So by your comment of it being a lemon you either need to fix it or trade it real quick as your running on borrowed time by what your stating on how it runs.

More info is needed. Not all 6420's had EFI.

My renter's 6420 tractor is sitting by my shop right now, Lucas/Delphi IP and conventional injectors.

This is the injector listed for a 6420 built for N American sales.

I went back to the 6420 parts catalog and searched the alphabetical index & this showed up but I see no serial number break.
FUEL INJECTION PUMP, HIGH PRESSURE COMMON RAIL SYSTEM

At the risk of sounding simple the 6420 I've run was very sensitive to a clogged fuel filter. It would sputter and carry on until the filter was replaced.

I'm thinking back a couple years but is there a lift pump on some of them too - maybe back under the seat. Know we had similar trouble once during silo filling.

Jim that is the system I am talking about. The 3-4 of them I have worked on all had the high pressure rail system on them.

I thought the common rail was the one you referred to. I guess there's no serial break but rather goes by type of engine number.

Hi All:
Thank you for all the comments. Sorry for taking so long to respond. I'm afraid to
drive the tractor after JDSeller said. I don't think the injectors are streaming
rather than spraying because there is no light blue smoke or any noticeable smoke
exiting the exhaust pipe. The injector pump is a Stanadyne A6 DE2435 5958. The
engine model is 4045HL271 DD21199. Serial number is CD4045G051233. Thanks for
the help. hoader

JD Seller was referring to common rail not a rotary IP such as your tractor has. I'd recommend removing your tractors injectors & have them pressure tested.
