I don't want to sound disrespectful to Woodchucks, but has anyone had real success ridding these pests from farm buildings, namely woodpiles? Perminately! Thank you in advancr

I go to war with them every single summer. They do make a great Bar-B-Que and yes I hate them and what they do to my garden

Depends on the surrounding habitat, if there's places for them to live in the vicinity, they will be back at some point, when those areas get crowded, young ones and mature will explore new areas and if its quiet around the place, no activity they get comfortable real quick. They don't like to be in the open for long, at least here they don't and are always on the move and near some cover, as they know they are vulnerable.

Dogs will keep them out, just the sight of them is effective. Eliminate and discourage areas where they want to build a den or can hide.

They're time consuming to hunt, but in the spring when first active, is a good time to knock the population down.

Where I am, there's too much habitat for them, they get crowded and over run the neighborhood, it took myself and 2 neighbors to push them back last season. I spotted a young one too close to my backs steps and garden this season, lucky shot got him on the move, + one other mature one, shot, but seemingly missed, he never came back and was a regular. So with the 7 I dealt with last year, trapped and released a few, had to shoot the rest, this year is nothing like last year at all. I have wood piles, tall weeds, some junk piled up to be thrown out and just about the perfect situation for them to move in, there is not a sign of a one so far, last year they were all over and if you sat still long enough one would run by. Had I left things like this last year, not good at all, time to get some yard work done !

I've been over run every other year for the last 4 years or so, never seen so many before that. I don't particularly dislike them, but when outnumbered they have to be dealt with around here or there will be dens everywhere and I mean everywhere. Got so bad one year, they built 3 new dens within 100 feet. I had to soak some rags with gasoline, cover the hole and wait, none of those came back. Just don't do that near buildings if its a concern regarding fire or volatile fumes. Big time leg breaker holes they made, and I had no time to wait, had to do it immediately for safety reasons.

I killed 8 one summer with a conibear trap. Cover every hole you can find but 1, put the trap over the open one. Will catch them coming or going.

permanently?
living in the country?
nope
Just a homeowner maintenance job, like cleaning your gutters.
Like the others, I don't have any dislike/like for them.
They move in, they have to go.
see one? act, don't wait....they make more..lol

think of your sheds, scrap piles and garden as what they are to the little fellas....prime real estate....
remove one, another will find it and......wow, look at this...and move in.

Quite a few years ago I had the best of all times with a 22-250. That is a 52gr frangible bullet with a 30/30 deer cartridge necked down to a 22 size. Talk about a smoken fast round! When the air is still and the humidity is high the bullet leaves a vapor trail!. Hogs just don't die... they blow up. Like in the old cartoons, BOOM.

I shot one the other day but it is only the second one I have seen in my life and I think it was just passing by. I'm on the relatively barren prairie and I keep my building site neat and clean. They are a problem a few miles north of me by the Sioux river where they have plenty of trees and brush for shelter.

Second the .22 as I keep one ready so when I see them out my back window I pop them as they go from the wood pile across the yard, albeit my yard has garden, wood piles, and old granary buildings to go under, and also soybean fields which they love to dig in. I have nailed 2 this year just catching them moving. Also can get them in the live trap if you make a woodchuck salad with greens..

First you have to be able to see them, then you have to have a clear shot that you do not hit something you do not want destroied, then you have to be a better shot than I am.
