drones again and a question

First I don't know much about these. My
question is what is the difference or issue
between these, remote control planes, model
rockets both of which has been equipped
with a camera? I understand that the
latter 2 are usually flown at a designated
site or club. Also hot air balloons and
these powered hang gliders. Both of which
has come down on private land. (I would not
shoot them or the pilot)!!!!

It's because people can actually fly small drones in an open shed door and make a video of tools to steal - or hover outside your home and shoot video through the windows of your home... either of things to steal or video that invades people's privacy.

Or in the case of one of them in the news recently where a guy shot it down while it was watching his daughter sun bathing in the yard. Good for him. Sweet ,agree on the "casing the joint" and that's the reception they can expect around my place......if they are fast enough to "get out of Dodge" before I can get my shotgun they may get to drive it back home.

The difference is that any doofus with a credit card can buy a drone and attempt to operate it as soon as the batteries are put in.
While there are RTR airplanes and rockets, most people build those for a hobby as a kind of labor of love. They enjoy seeing them fly and the challenge of controlling the flight rather than just what the camera sees. One is being used for the enjoyment of flight and the other is used as a spy tool.

Balloons and paragliders are easy to see and easy to track and the guy flying it is visible right before your eyes. It seems many of the drones are purposefully made hard to see.

Don't know about remote control model airplanes. Drones , I think can be flown over property that you own,but not over property you do not own. And at altitudes under 400 feet because the FAA controls airspace over 500 feet allowing small manned aircraft to fly at that level in rural areas.(Yes,a crop duster can fly lower than 400 ft if you hired him) Am not sure if you need a license to fly drones over your own property. Legally you can't fly drone over someone else's land. Never figured individuals own airspace with a property deed much over the top of tree canopy, because here (IN) we are allowed to trim tree limbs over our property even if the tree trunk is not ours(think fencerows). Now where is that fine disclaimer that rrlund uses.

I would obviously NOT shoot down a pilot, however if an un manned drone hovers over my private home I may well shoot it down and ask questions later. Again, as an attorney I have NOT researched the law but am willing to defend myself in court and let the chips fall where they may. Do NOT take this as legal advice, I'm ONLY saying what I who happens to be an attorney who believes in private property rights would do if the law is unsettled. A man has to believe in something otherwise he will fall for anything.

JohnT,
Jobs and money, Indiana is hoping the FAA will pick us as a possible drone test site.

After the air guard pulled out of Hulman Field years ago, I was told a person connected the air force that a division of the military intellectual flys drones all around the world out of there.
Drone test site

George, interesting article, thanks. When big brother government tells us they are NOT interested in spying on us or anything else WATCH OUT LOL

I still say if one hovers over my home IM GONNA OWN IT. If they want to put me in jail I am equipped to and will enjoy the challenge.

That guy was arrested, but not for destruction of the drone. I think it was for shooting in town or something.
The guys flying it actually showed up at his door ready to whip him for it.

Darned near every law can be tested in court. I get the feeling some laws are passed with the expectation that a pursuing lawsuit will refine that law down farther. Most common folks don't have the financial or intellectual backing to fight it. If a billionaire trial attorney shoots down a snooping drone and is brought to court he has the backing to defend himself and possibly have the law changed by the court. If a little guy like me shoots one down I end up in jail and that is the end of it.

You are right. That's what it will take; somebody using a drone to spy on or harass someone who has power and connections: a
congressman, a Clinton, a Bush, somebody with influence and the law will get fixed "overnight".

Is there ever a point where you would use a drone?????

Would you use a drone if you think your neighbor took something from you, like cows, tractor, truck, trailer and the cops wouldn't do anything?

Would you use a drone to find a lost or kidnapped child? Your animals got out and you need to find them. You may have to fly over neighbor's property?

I would do everything I could if my child were lost.

have used mine to help a neighbor find her lost dog. I've used it to to find out how my property drains and inspected my roof. Always finding new ways to use it.

some life guards are now using them to watch for sharks. MUCH better visibility looking straight down than from the beach.

As a kid,my brother got lost neighbors bean
field. I'm sure my parents would have loved
to have a drone. But drones weren't
invented yet.

Cops can use drones, so are going to shoot
them?

I think city fokes may have issues, but you
can't use a gun in city.

About 4 miles away is a private airport.
They fly ultra lights there. Ultra lights
fly at tree top level. You can see pilot.
Are you going to shoot them?

If I had reason to suspect that ultra-light was equipped with a camera, and was making several passes over my house, I would atleast report him.

Show where it's illegal to fly over and
take pics. Every year airplanes fly over
every house in county, takes pics, and pics
are posted on internet, with address and
owner's name, along with legal description
of property, taxes, and value. That is
legal.

non-official hobby type drones.......

Life is fun, I'd join the fun.
Get me one.....intruder drone and mine collide/crash over my back yard, I imagine it would be the intruders fault :)
too expensive to crash? follow his drone with my drone back to his place. Might look around a bit. what's good for the goose..right? :)
or fly/follow it, just to be able to know where to go to have a nice friendly chat with the nice fella :)

lol another project...hmmm, how can I soup this thing up.....
