How to take hydraulic cylinder apart

I have a cylinder on a MF 235 tractor with Massey loader. The lift cylinders will pick the front of the tractor up but as soon as you let off the handle the front goes down . I think the cylinders are leaking by on the inside. The loader is run off the tractors dual hydraulic remotes. Any way I am going to rebuild the cylinders and I have never seen one like this. It has a snap ring that I can see. Do you think as soon as a squeeze the snap ring it will come apart?

If you can see the ring, yes it should come apart. ensure that the far end is open so you don't develop a vacuum. You might need a come-a-long to get it out.

When you can't see them and there is nothing external to put a wrench or any visible signs of getting them apart, you push in on the end and expose a hidden snap ring. Removing that allows you to yank the packing out.

Going back together, a ring compressor for engine pistons is handy to compress the packing and help in driving it back in. Lots of hyd fluid to keep things all slicked all up.

I restored a JD 95 Combine once and restored about 20 cylinders and every pair was a different way to enter.

yes. There is likely either a snap ring, or stepped ridge that keeps the rod end from going inward. Make sure all pressure is off of it before removing the ring. Jim
 
Do you use any other cylinders on the tractor? Get a high pressure shut off valve and insert it in the circuit or unhook the coupler form the base end of the cylinder, stick the hose in a clean bucket with the end of the hose open then lift the front of the tractor, let go of the handle, will oil come out of the hose? If it does your cylinder leaks, if not the problem is in the control valve. If using the extra shut off valve you will see if the problem is in the cylinder or the control valve.
 
The snap ring is that way to hold the gland in both directions. I would suggest that you push the gland in before you try to pull it out so you can clean the rust out of the bore first, it will make the gland come out much easier. It is also possible there is another round wire snap ring behind it and pushing it in will let you see it.
 
Push the gland in, it will reveal a round wire in the tube.
Pull the wire out, clean and oil the piece of exposed bore and pull the gland out with the rod.
 
From your very description of what is going on , I am thinking your problem is the control valve not the cylinder and one poster tells you how to check it.

Ditto what jm stated. Sounds as if control valve is the problem.
 
Thers nothing hidden about the snap ring. I can see it in the pic. squeeze it and the gland nut will come out with the rod/piston. May be valve or may be cyl that's "slipping" by. In the forklift industry I see a fair number of cyls. that the piston seals give up and bypass.
 
Do you honestly think that snap ring is all that holds against the pressure?????????? There is another ring inside.
