OT - Owl Banding

We had a bit of an "Owl Banding party" last Saturday evening.
35 people showed up!

A fellow who bands owls came out to band the baby Northern Saw Whet Owls.
The Momma is peeking out of the nest box in one photo.

She laid 6 eggs and raised all 6 young ones - 3 had already fledged before the banding.
The male does all the hunting (mice, at night), Momma looks after feeding the babies.

The babies are right around 4 weeks old in these pictures.
They are the most adorable little guys - you can handle them, take pictures, then put them back in the nest box and the Momma continues to look after them until they all fledge.

They band these owls to see how far they migrate, how old they live, etc.
They are strictly nocturnal, so they are seldom seen.

After the banding get-together, many people instantly wanted the nest box plans!
This is about an hour NE of Edmonton Alberta.

Hope you enjoy the pictures; thanks for viewing.

Fascinating creatures. At least someone cares enough to....give a hoot. (yes I just had to go there.... ;)

Nice post.
But I never cared to see those bands.
One of my favorite dishes is a boiled owl.
And a couple of times those bands got missed when we cleaned them and made the whole meal taste like plastic.

Yeah, I have a friend here in MO that has her PhD in whatever it is that makes you a bat expert.

I am always asking her for bat soup recipies or inquiring what sized shot works best on bats.

She doesn't see the humor at times.

Here is an adult Screech Owl I found a few years ago. People at the rescue said I shouldn't have been able to handle it and it must be injured. I think it got clipped by a car but could still walk and somewhat fly.
