John Deere Crankshaft

I recently discovered that splines on my model A's crankshaft were pretty bad on the pulley end. I found and purchased decent looking used one to replace it on ebay and just received it yesterday. I was somewhat dismayed to find that one of the splines was partially missing as shown in the pics. It was described as having good splines and this was not shown in any of the pictures on the auction. I thought that it might have gotten chipped during shipping but there was no evidence on the package to indicate that. Upon a closer look there are machining marks like someone purposely milled this off at some point. Why would they need to do that?

Will this need to be repaired? All of the other splines and what's left of the one look really good. I don't plan on working this tractor hard but I also don't want any problems down the road either.

I'm still pretty disappointed that this wasn't disclosed in the auction to begin with. The seller has 100% positive feedback so I thought he would be trustworthy.

I'm no expert on this old tractors so I would appreciate hearing opinions from more experienced folks.

Make sure the casting numbers match your old crank. Those are good looking splines and that notch was only on certain years and the clutch driver had a rivet in it and that acted so as to only be able to install it one way.

Makes me feel better that its supposed to be that way.

I haven't pulled the old crank yet but I was told that my tractor (1944 Model A) takes a A2360R which my new one is. I don't know if the old one has the notch that this one does or not.

I'm very happy with how the splines look compared to a lot of others I see for sale and what I hear it would cost to repair the old splines.

Now hopefully the crank journals aren't going to require much work. At least that should be something the local machine shop can take care of.

It's obviously made that way. The end of ONE spline wouldn't simply break off in a neat circular milled pattern!
