corn harvest begins, N. Central Texas

They started the harvest today, earliest I ever remember seeing around here. All the fields I have seen used a short stalk variety with 4-5 ears per stalk, small ears about half the size of what I saw in Illinois. One farmer told me the yield was "fair" so far. The corn tasseled early after all the rain in May then dried out real fast when it got so hot. I'm betting the yield will be sub-par on most of it.

they use a corn here in Va. that has a long ear but usually only 1 ear per stalk . Dad wouldn't have recognized it .

Here the coastal bend area of S. Texas the corn harvest is over. Most everything was harvested the last 2 weeks. Haven't heard about yield yet.

A couple of places I saw grow the tall corn and cut for silage. Everybody else uses the short variety with 2 ears per stalk. Passing a field is like soldiers in ranks for a review. Every stalk is the same, same number of ears in the same place. Sure makes cleaning up the mess after harvest easier.
