We had a bit of an "Owl Banding party" last Saturday evening.
35 people showed up!
A fellow who bands owls came out to band the baby Northern Saw Whet Owls.
The Momma is peeking out of the nest box in one photo.
She laid 6 eggs and raised all 6 young ones - 3 had already fledged before the banding.
The male does all the hunting (mice, at night), Momma looks after feeding the babies.
The babies are right around 4 weeks old in these pictures.
They are the most adorable little guys - you can handle them, take pictures, then put them back in the nest box and the Momma continues to look after them until they all fledge.
They band these owls to see how far they migrate, how old they live, etc.
They are strictly nocturnal, so they are seldom seen.
After the banding get-together, many people instantly wanted the nest box plans!
This is about an hour NE of Edmonton Alberta.
Hope you enjoy the pictures; thanks for viewing.
