ok it's a Deere 3150.
How far and how fast has it ever been towed without the engine operating? What is the condition of the transmission sump screen and the transmission filter? What kind of oil was used in the transmission? Has anybody tested the transmission pump pressure ? Any problems with the high/low, 4WD or the pto ? Is there a cab on the tractor ?
Are the shift cables dried out and binding ? Is the shift linkages full of dust, dirt, mud and manure? Have the cab mounts settled?

There are no shift cables to dry out or bind. What harm would towing do to trans as there is no tow position on shifters?

I agree with RodinNS probably a bad brg in trans.

Who ever went through the transmission missed some worn parts and may have blotched the assembly.
Is there a loader on the tractor ?
