Duramax Update

We had to make a long parts run yesterday and the first 'road trip' for this old pickup.

Levels right out at 17.5 mpg, which is just great! :>)

Oh, and the cheezy grille guard is gone now.

So you're not worried about hitting Kangaroos ;) (roo bar)

Its got some miles on it, how's the ride, sounds like you made a good move, but we won't be seeing any catastrophic break down photos like we were... hopefully LOL!

I just spent a few thousand on my non duramax 2002 this spring, replacing those "soft" michigan rockers, I also had the truck sprayed with Krown Rust Control after the repairs, doing that every year should keep it in good shape. Glad to see the truck is treating you well Allan, I would hope your trips for parts would slow down a bit, you have had plenty of parts runs this year....

Would be interesting to see the milage after a month without resetting it. A friend of mine just bought a ford with the new 6.? gas and he's getting 14-15 long term with it. And it pulls great too.

My brother in law was crowing about how his Duramax got 24 MPG on a trip. I questioned that and he got all defensive and told me the fuel gauge was at a c certain place when he left and it was at a c certain place when he got home and he estimated how many miles the trip was, therefore the mileage was 24! I have not owned a Duramax, it might be possible to attain 24 a few times but a person has to keep accurate records over the long run. A neighbor claims his was chipped and will get 22 if driven easily on a long trip

I have a '07 Duramax and your mpg and mine are about the same. Never understood why some people feel the need to inflate the mpg their vehicles get. My truck has 3.73 gears & pulls well. It is not as happy pulling heavy loads as my Dodge, but will get the job done.

Hi Allen. I have an 08 Duramax and I love it. Can’t compare it to other brands cause that wouldn’t be fair since I have not owned them. I keep very close records on my mileage and oil changes and such and I have found keeping track of my mileage is very boring since it rarely changes more than 1 or 2 mpg no matter if I am pulling or running empty. I would say my avg doing weekly driving is 17 mpg but I did on two occasions get 22 running the hi way around 65 mph with an empty 18' bumper trailer. The worst I have gotten by far is I follow a friend with a lead foot to Texas once running 75 to 80 mph pulling a small boat and I dropped to around 13 mpg. He was in a Chevy 1/2 ton gas job and he only got around 9. The truck seems to love to run but as far as good mpg about 65mph seems to be the ticket for my truck anyway. Anything faster than that I burn a lot more fuel. You seem to be a great guy so I hope it turns out to be a real keeper for you.

I bought a new Ford with the 6.2 gas in April. 13.5 long term with it so far at 5000 miles. Lots of wagon/buggy/trailer dragging and short trips. That $9,000 diesel option buys a whole bunch of gas.

Paul, hope you keep a copy of that picture! Some day that little girl will want that on her living room wall! Beautiful!

Yep works out that way based on fuel prices in my area. But I've already got a diesel. If I were buying new it would be hard to justify nowdays unless you primarily tow with it.

Does not sound like a very accurate system, although the early Duramax
(LB7...2001-2004 I believe) can get that kind of mileage stock.

I had a 2001 F-250 7.3 2WD with 3.73 gears that I bought used in about '05. For the first year I recorded every fill-up and figured up 17.6 mpg overall. During the summer it trended about 1 mpg better, during the winter it was worse. Used mostly for 12 mile trips to work at 55-60 mph with an occasional trailer tow and a few 1000 mile trips. On long, trailer-free trips down non-interstate 65 mph roads it could just hit 20 mpg but I never recorded any tanks better than that. Spinning it up to 75 mph on the interstate made it a lot thirstier but due to that engine's roar at those speeds I rarely drove that fast.
