LA , The wife and I think the idea of taking the ferry SS Badger across Lake Michigan sounds good. Can you drive up and buy passage, or do you have to book ahead ? if ahead , how far ahead ? Would love to spend more time sliding down south of Chicago , but I think we would be short of time. All tips are welcome, as we are not pulling the trailer, and will need to stay in hotels. Bruce

Bruce, I live 10 miles away from Manitowoc WI. You can buy tickets when you arrive. The ship is huge and never full. Be sure to save a few hours to stop and visit with me. I have case tractors and can give you a tour of my F I L dairy farm.

Bruce, Looks like I got run over before I could reply, but the advice is good. Get their phone number on their website (SS Badger) and give them a call for answers to your questions. They are very helpful.

You can enter the US at Sarnia, then head west on interstates to Grand Rapids, then NW to Ludington. Ferry leaves Ludington at 9am if I recall correctly. You gain an hour going west across the lake so you arrive in Wisconsin at noon.

Traffic in Michigan can get heavy near metro areas, but once you get west of the lake you can sit back and enjoy a nice drive.

If you stay in Ludington the night before you ride the ferry, there is a nice restaurant on the east side of town on hwy #10 called "Scotties".

I hauled a Cockshutt across the lake in late May....the lake was still very cold and we were glad to have insulated jackets. Take something with you to keep warm just in case. You can leave port in very warm air, then you can hit the cold stuff a mile out. It is warm inside the ferry, but I enjoy sitting outside near the fantail to watch the water.

When are you going?

Where are you headed?

I have great short video of my trip, but only know how to email it to you.

Manitowoc is nice. Visit the WI Maritime Museum. They have the USS Cobia submarine. Pinecrest historical village is great too. Bill

We took that ferry across one hot summer night. The plant was to sleep in our camper van - except they wouldn't let us stay in the an during the trip. It was Hot - Hot and very humid all the way across the lake. When we docked on the Michigan side, we checked into a motel right away and slept through most of the day. Avoid the night run (if they still do that).

Head north out of Manitowoc, Two Rivers has a few museums too. Including a farm museum, Hamilton wood type, and fishing village. Then head north out of town and swing by here for a stop(I usually get home around 2:15/2:30 on weekdays).
