Article about what a can of Coke does to your body.

Rarely, in a frosty glass, like a root beer, not a good habit at all. People harp about bottled water, so what about the zillion other beverages out there that are no good for you in the same kind of container?

Not sure if the scientific basis for this is accurate. However, I CAN tell you that I gave up soft drinks in March 2014 when I read how many grams of sugar were in a soft drink. I subsequently dropped between 5-10 lbs without any other dietary changes. I DO like sugar, so I substituted club soda, lime and a couple of teaspoons of sugar to quench my thirst (basically a virgin Mojitos  ) on occasion. Most of the time I drink water but there are times, I like that "sweetness". My blood sugar readings dropped and my doctor was pleased as he says I'm diabetic, numbers are around 6.5 and 125-130. I don't take any medication for it. He says if I hit 7.0, I'm going on meds.

All in all, I feel better without the soft drinks, can't say I miss them.

....and we just consume more every year and the life expectancy continues to go up. Every week on the web their are articles stating how sugar , corn syrup/high fructose corn syrup , soft drinks , beef , fish , pork...oh heaven forbid you eat pork and especially bacon..you will probably die an excruciating death by next week. Oh, and everything green is poisoned by those bad farmers trying to get more yield too. oh, and doctors don't eat or drink any of these because they have all read the same reports. They must just live on water.

Some of the co called child behavior experts claim there is no such thing as a 'sugar high' in children. If I interpret what is in this link right, there certainly can be a sugar high.

On a related note, I'm not a heavy soda drinker but I do crave one about once a day in the summer. I had to quit drinking regular soda because I found out the high fructose corn syrup was kicking up my irritable bowel syndrome so I started in on diet soda. Then soda started coming out with pure sugar instead of fructose. I tried one and it kicked up the IBS again. After a little investigation I found out regular sugar contains fructose, only not as concentrated. Then I hear about all of the horrors contained in artificial sweeteners. (sigh). I just finished off a diet cherry Pepsi as I was typing this. In the morning I will load up on caffeine.

I believe it, soft drinks and junk food which I rarely consume about make me sick anymore,I used to do both and now feel a lot better not consuming them. When I'm thirsty I drink water about 95% of the time,I'm fortunate to have springs and a great well that have pure clean excellent drinking water.Take a jug of it when I leave home to go anywhere especially to something like an auction where nothing decent to drink is sold.

When I was a kid and Coke was only in the 6 oz girlie shaped bottle, with the name of the city that produced it on the bottom, there was talk around town that if you put a piece of raw beef in one, 24 hours you'd just have a deposit on the bottom of the bottle. Never did it. Course it's a known fact that Coke started out as a snort beverage.

Average lifespan and how long a person lives that makes it out of childhood isn't the same thing.By saving many children that would have otherwise died the average lifespan has increased over the years. And there are many more people all the time that do try to eat a healthier diet so their increased lifespan ups the average. As a whole Americans have never been more dependent on drugs and other things to help them keep living and many of the health problems people have is diet related.

In June of 1980, I moved my tools from the old dealership shop to the new one on the other side of town. It was out of the city limits so boss had to drill his own well. I quit drinking water then because it tasted like it came out of the sewer, and started drinking Diet Coke when it was introduced about that same time. Drink a lot of it every day but did switch to caffeine free a year or so ago. I do drink coffee so get city water in that but otherwise, no water. Going strong at 78.

There is a woman on the www that had a real bad round with her health and it turned out to be that sweetener. She got a PhD in alternative medicine and now sells information about it and how to work around it and it's side effects. Her name is Janet Star Hull if anybody is interested.

I can't stand the soda pop sugar and since I gave up my beer and tannic acid in tea is a problem for me, I just bite the bullet and go with Diet Canada Dry Ginger Ale. A real zesty beverage. You can drink just so much plain water over the course of the day and after awhile it just doesn't quench your thirst.

I drink a lot of fruit juice.
Orange or cranberry.
I water them down a Lot.
Like about 75% water, 25% juice.
Just enough to give it a little flavor you can guzzle down on a hot day.
Doc did tell me there are a lot of calories in juice too but it's not so much as pop.
I agree water does get old.
Try the juice sometime.
I drink coffee too.
Usually about 3 cups a day.
Not trying to make myself look like a saint cause I don't drink pop.

I've drank at least one Coke a day since I was a kid. Often times I'll drink several over the course of a day. I'm currently 47. I'm 6'1 or2", not overweight, had plenty of situations where it could have happened, but have been never had a broken bone, rarely get sick, and often times work 12 to 14 hours a day. Too, unlike the article says, it doesn't give me the urge to use the bathroom any more often than I would if I were drinking water (which I can't stand the taste of). All I can say is that if the Coke is killing me, then I imagine at the rate it's going, it's going to take it a very long time to do it.

Best of all, when my time does come, and based on the Bible that time is already chosen no matter what I do, that I am going to go on my own terms, not denying the things that I enjoy in life just because some doctor said that doing so was going to extend my life another year or two.

Not to say I wouldn't like another year or two, but again if the time is already chosen that is a mute point. If it's not, then what good is an extra year or two if you can't have/do the things you enjoy during that extra time???

Actually, it's not the aspartame - AND a LOT of foods turn to formaldehyde once they are in your "gut" - most at higher levels.

I admittedly feel generally better when Marilyn and I eat homegrown veggie, meat stew with no spice or salt, and I drink only water. But I do frequently cave in to my craving for a can of good old Pepsi!

I don't consume much pop. 3-4 a month at best. Now coffee? 3-4 pots a day, no cream or sugar and we grin beans fresh for each pot !

if you eat real healthy, get plenty of rest, plenty of exercise, and drink lots of water------ you are still gonna die

ep but in the meantime you won't be overweight and can outrun 75% of the people your age or younger, you can pull up your socks and tie down your shoelaces without sitting down or getting out of breath and you may still fit the size of clothes you had in your youth

BTW i don't drink pepsi or coke or any other soft drink for that matter, neither do i drink booze or beer
Water or coffee is all i drink.

I have drank enough Coke and Diet Coke in my lifetime to float a battleship. Have switched to water for a year at a time twice and never could tell the difference. I am on the executive health plan at Mayo Clinic and get checked over each year and find no significant difference in any of my numbers although anybody with any degree of medical knowledge will tell you that it has no redeeming qualities. At seventy five I am much more prone to follow the water route and not test fate

Without going a routine diet I have almost eliminated all soft drinks and greasy fried foods and fast food, cutting out most breads and sugars too. I hate it but its time to start taking better care of myself, I feel a lot better and have lost 15lbs without doing anything else. Even gatorade is high in sugar and shouldn't be used by most kids and adults who drink it.

For hydration, electrolytes and carbs etc we should all drink water and eat fruits n vegetables...right?

One thing a person should do if you are drink the darker sodas and don't give them up (a tough one to do) is to up your calcium. The ingredient that gives it the caramel color takes calcium out of your system and can weaken your bones.

And the loss of calcium has been known to cause or contribute to kidney stones too.

(...if you are drink the darker sodas) lol....maybe I need a drink as I cant seem to type and think at the same time.

I'm 72 yrs old, same ht. & shape as you & have the same 'Coke' habit. It just don't hurt some people.

This article is a good reason to drink sugar free coke. All soft drinks have too much sugar. Some even have more sugar and caffeine than, some energy drinks too . Isn't caffeine part of the food pyramid along with chocolate?

I don't pay any attention to articles like that. You don't know if there is any truth behind it or someone with an alternative motive like they are paid by a soft drink competitor.

All those people who eat allegedly "healthy" and exercise are gonna feel silly someday when they are setting around dying of nothing...........Buddy of mines dad died recently at like 95 years old and in days prior he was out in the hot sun mowing with what he called hid "cordless weedeater" (hand scythe). He smoked unfiltered camels and EVERY DAY around 4 PM he pulled a half pint of Calverts out of his bibs pocket and drank it saying it was his "happy hour" So when I went to his funeral I told his son "That darn whiskey and cigarettes killed him didn't it" Of course it was meant with respect and my buddy took it that way and thanked me.

What we eat and drink is gonna kill us all some day

On the one hand, the author is a licensed pharmacist, so he should know something about medicine.

On the other hand, his web site pushes a bunch of snake oil remedies and "holistic" medicine, so your skepticism is will placed. He sounds like a Dr. Oz wannabe.

skip33...

In case you've never heard it...

Look on youtube for the song "Still Gonna Die" on Old Dogs CD. It's a collaboration of Jerry Reed, Waylon Jennings, Mel Tillis and Bobby Bare... with writing by poet Shel Silversteen. It's a funny song. The entire album is funny.

The sugar high thing is just the excuse so called "parents" use for not slapping the kid on the southern exposure when they need it.

This old boy made it up to like 95 and was "weed eating" a few days before. Maybe weed eating was his secret lol

I like how a friend put it to me one day:

He pointed out that so many of us seek out the best oil for our vehicles, the best gas, the best parts, etc. We cringe if a little water or foreign particles got in. Yet we turn around and just dump the worst crap in the world right into our own bodies.

I think you can go to an extreme in either direction when it comes to what we should and shouldn't be eating - but his comment has stuck with me, and has on many occasions made me re-think some food choices.

A little bad stuff here and there isn't bad, but as odd as it may sound, I do think it helps to think - what if I were my truck, would I put that crap in it?

As for knowing a few 90 year olds with bad health habits, yeah, we all know one or two - but on your other 8 or 9 fingers start counting those that didn't make it nearly that far. You'll quickly run out of fingers.

5% Missouri beer on tap into a frosty mug what you mean by 'similar?' Taste good aftern hot summer days work

Same with my SIL, smoked and drank. Died a young age of 55. She should have switch to rum and coke.

(quoted from post at 20:38:07 07/29/15) I don't always eat right but I could count
on one hand the number of soft drinks I
drink in a year.
coke

I guess I've been dead for years. I've drank at least 2 cokes or mountain dews as day for 35 years or more. Sometimes in hot weather I drink a 6 pack a day, in addition to ice tea. I can still out work most folks half my age. I probably would be healthier but there are few pleasures in life anymore so I'll continue to indulge. I may die tonight but I have no regrets. I believe genetics has as much to do with how healthy you are as what you eat or drink in moderation. My grandfather smoked all his life. Most of the time he was smoking and chewing twist tobacco at the same time. He also drank his share of Tennessee whiskey and died at the young age of 84. Up until that time he was hardly sick a day in his life. Over indulgence of anything is harmful but a moderate amount of almost anything is OK.

OK, so I go to the store, and I see root beer and birch beer sodas. Both are dark. Root beer is brown, birch beer is reddish. Then on the next shelf, I see CLEAR root beer and birch beer.
So, since they are both available as dark or clear, does that make one better than the other? I think not. I think it is simply a matter of appearance. I put ZERO importance on the color of the soda. That whole business about dark or light amounts to somebody's "back door" way of attacking soda without coming out and naming names.

Sugar in Soda
A serving of soda is equal to 12 ounces. Lemon-lime soda contains 37.6 grams of added sugar per serving, and ginger ale contains 31.8 grams, each of which is equal to about 9 1/2 teaspoons of sugar. Cola has 38.9 grams of added sugar per serving, and pepper-type soda varieties contain 38.2 grams. Cola and pepper-type sodas have about 9 3/4 teaspoons of sugar. Root beer contains 39.2 grams of sugar per serving, which is almost 10 teaspoons of sugar. Cream soda is among your worst choices with 49.3 grams per serving or 12 1/3 teaspoons. Grape and orange-flavored sodas contain between 42 and 45 grams of sugar, which is a little more than 10 teaspoons. Keep in mind that if you drink a 16-ounce or 20-ounce bottle of soda, your intake of sugar will be much higher.

A serving of soda is 12 oz. I see people at a resturant with large soft drinks. They may be drinking 100 to 150 grams of sugar. 150 grams of sugar is about 1/3 of a pound. I'll take my chances with aspartame, instead of sugar.

A 2006 article published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" reports that drinking sugar-sweetened beverages, such as soda, is associated with unhealthy weight gain and obesity, both of which can increase your risk of cardiovascular problems, according to a 2002 article published in "Circulation."

JohnT,
Who knows, he may have lived to 100 if he didn't weedeat. Eating weeds may contain sugar. Who knows? Good book says there is a time to be born and a time to die, and it's already written before you are born. Right? Who really knows?

Knowing a victim of aspartame poisoning (my sister) I have a VERY BAD opinion of it. There are many other sweeteners that can be used, and some of them are actually not harmful to you. Bach in the old days, when they banned cyclamates and saccharin, a host of substitutes popped up. Some good, some not so good. Aspartame is in a questionable position, as it has caused known cases of poisoning. Maybe better to forget the soda and drink iced tea, water, or something that is not so controversial.

Like Ultradog, I can count on one hand the number of sodas I have in a year, and it's been that way for 5 decades. I might indulge in 3 or 4 bottles of local wine a year, but forget the beer or booze. Last regular check-up was about a decade ago, and my last cholesterol check came back at 99, after having a ham and cheese omelet made with 8 eggs plus toast with real butter for breakfast. Last BP check was while waiting at a pharmacy for an RX for an abscessed tooth. It was 170/68, pulse of 62 (after jogging in from the parking lot).

A good friend, grew up on a farm, slugged quarts of Mt Dew every day for years (especially during haying season), has been obese and diabetic for over a decade, has already had toes amputated, is losing eyesight due to the diabetes, and is several years younger than I am.

Invariably, the most obese, power cart riding people I see at the local grocery, have their carts loaded with soda, and one recently, poptarts. Ya can't tell me there isn't a connection.

beer, water, milk & diet pepsi here.(not on a diet, Just don't like the taste of regular)
This time of year I do drink gallons of water.....
1) I need to replace my sweat
2)drink half, pour half over my head......pop would make me sticky, milk would make me stinky, and I never waste beer :)
