new hay roller question

ok so I just got a new to me 550 Hesston roller.. be the first roller iv owned with hydraulic tension.. my question to u is.. I have to re build my pressure valve on the roller because the previou owner said the pressure on the gauge would bleed off wile rolling. what pressure should I be running on my gaugue to make a nice tight roll that will last.. I know there adjustable. just wanted to know what u all run

My current JD 375 rolls a 5' long by 4' diameter roll and has no separate tensioner. The gate lifting cylinders are part of the rolling system besides lifting the gate. I learned all that thanks to TX. Jim. While I was working through the learning process on this baler I installed a 5k oil filled gauge in the feed to those cylinders. When the bale marker arrives at the red mark (time to stop and tie) the gauge is sitting right at 2500#. I get a nice tight bale with a tight center such that sometimes I have to use my FEL spike as I need to put downward pressure on the spike to get it to penetrate.....otherwise it just pushes the bale over.

Before wading into the tension valve, check to make sure cylinders are not leaking internally. This leak will keep tension system from making tight bales. This is most often the reason for soft bales.

I haven't used this roller yet. but I did see that there is 4 cylenders on this roller just for the tension and 2 more for the gate.. the previous owner said that when he was bailing with it he could get a 1/4 to half a roll and tension would back down and belts would start slipping nd he have to bump the end gate to up pressure,, from what I read my valve is by passing and not holdling pressure.. I already have new seals for it so I was gonna re build it and see what happened..

I would try it first. The old owner could have had a leaking SCV valve on his tractor and the baler might be fine.

If you are calling a baler a roller I believe it will turn out that the pressure cylinders may be by-passing hydraulic fluid and that will cause the bales to be too loose. To test to see if the cylinders are not holding fluid, make a couple of bales and then stop and put your hand on each of the cylinders and if any one of them is warm that is where you are losing pressure.
Incidentally, if the belts slow down or start to slip , push the hydraulic lever that you use to close the gate as I believe that will cause the pressure to increase on the belt and holding cylinders. This will allow you to finish making the bale that you have started and help in finding the leaking cylinder.

Cylinder rebuild kits are available from Hesston dealers.
