CONUNDRUM???

My son is around 6'2", brown wavy hair and full beard.

Anyway, no matter where we go... if he has to go park the car or leave us, I just tell the attendant to watch for Jesus to walk in and direct them to us.

In no way do I intend to imply my son is Jesus.

I just find that when I tell them that someone looking like Jesus will be coming into the area and please direct that person to me.

He always is directed to us.

I guess it's when you first explain this and the dis-belief you encounter. But, once he comes into the room, everyone points out how much he looks like their interpretation of what Jesus looked like.

I just enjoy the looks on faces when I tell them that when someone that looks like Jesus walks in, please direct him to my table!

Big good looking guy with a beard, would probably work also. But then you would not get to elicit the reaction your trying to get. gobble

CONUNDRUM- My statement was only trying to relay how we all have these preconceived notions/ideas of how Jesus looked.

I don't know what He looked like.

I just found it odd that I could tell someone,"When Jesus walks in the door, point him down the hallway towards me". And that is what they did every time!

Question is: Did these people actually think they were directing Jesus where to go?

The answer to your question is actually quite simple..
When you said to point the Jesus looking fellow or just Jesus to us Im sure they were well aware they were not pointing the Real Jesus Christ to your table. But in saying that the person or persons that did direct him to you noticed his likeness from what they have learned from church.

Since there was not a single description ever mentioned of what Jesus looked like in the bible, how do we know what Jesus looked like? It's my understanding that the monks started to draw pictures of Jesus hundreds of years after he was dead and the images stuck. Okay, just kidding with you. If somebody said that your son looked like Jesus, I would know what to look for.
My son is about 6'5", has naturally tight curly hair and looks like the identical twin of Napoleon from the movie "Napoleon Dynamite". (Google the name) He even has a "Vote for Pedro" t-shirt that he occasionally wears. When he walks into a room wearing that t-shirt, he always gets a few laughs. Of course, the movie is one that teenagers would watch and most people on this sight probably have never heard of it.

I've long been amused by these people who see a stain on the floor, a growth on a tree or a burnt piece of toast, and claim it looks like Jesus or the Virgin Mary. Then a crowd gathers, and everybody's saying, "Yeah, looks just like Jesus!" Pretty soon it's on the national news, and if it's movable, on E-Bay. Anyone recall what that piece of toast sold for?

My question is, even if something does form some kind of abstract image, why does everyone automatically assume it looks like Jesus or Mary? Anybody here ever seen a photo of Jesus or Mary? Why can't it be John Lennon, or ZZ Top, or Cher or Margaret Thatcher? People do weird stuff.

The owner of Dobbins Auto Parts in Adams Center just died. His initials are G,O,D. One of his customers/associates joked that on the phone the feller would tell him, this is GOD, go get your father".

That was me about a thousand yrs. ago. Same size and look. Now 5'10" and no beard and not that much hair. Funny what time will do.

ditchwitch- I did not mean to imply nor intone that he was Jesus. It was just the fact that I could suggest a characterization of what to look for...and 100% of the time they pointed him out.

I never mean't to imply he was Jesus..but, to point out how many people his image as being representative of their interpretation of what Jesus looks like.

BTW, my son is no means any embodiment of Jesus.

Jesus most likely was a short, middle-eastern looking man. He most certainly would not have been tall, or Caucasian. The pictures of Jesus in churches have always cracked me up do to this. Most people today in the US would be suspicious of him due to his looks.

Old Gordon passed away?? I knew him well some years ago. Used to transport cars for him. Great guy!! Sorry to hear of his passing.

LOL, nothing ment bad. I would say most folks have seen the pictures of what Jesus was suppose to look like from Bibles ,Books, media. So everyone has that image kinda burnt into there brains weather you believe in him or not. I would think that image is the most recognized image in the U.S and maybe beyond. I mean if someone told me to look for the guy that looks like Jesus i could spot him out of a crowd right quick.

Some researchers of Bible and other writings of the time have concluded Jesus was likely about 5 foot 2 inch to 5 foot 6 inch and was short 'pudding bowl' hair cut in the style of 'Nazarene' religious practice or possibly shorter in the or Roman style for bug control, strong possibility he was also relatively clean shaven or very short cut beard. Essenane, Nazarene plain dress and grooming practice and current Coptic writings of old traditions and the Bible reference to 'Nazarene' meaning the religious subgroup instead of a place name interpretations - 'Jesus the Nazarene' instead of 'Jesus from Nazareth' would be a better identifier of a person that had a 'style' of grooming and dress recognizable to strangers as 'the Marine looking guy (or hippy looking)' instead of a 'guy from New York city'. Jesus looking guy sometime found in ER rooms after bar fights- bleeding hands/forearms from defensive wounds against broken bottles and blades, facial cuts, maybe a mid gut wound and possible broken legs- just about what you'd expect from someone pulled down from crucifiction tree. All early images of Jesus are derived from the face on the Shroud of Turin. Usually there was some interpretation of the features on the Shroud.
