Wasn't pretty. Each summer I raise 4 to 5 acres of oats to take to local steam show for threshing. Used a borrowed JD binder pulled with a '49 Farmall C. Crop was heavy, some taller than tractor tiers. Binder had twine issues, finally got a roll of 1600 baler twine. Knotter fought me every which way. Spent about 1/3 my time fussing with the machine. Now comes the work part... shockig all those bundles. Binder was throwing a bundle every 4 to 5 feet, so there's plenty of work to be done

these binders should have a bundle carrier. you carry enough bundles for a stook then dump them in rows.

Bundle carrier doesn't trip properly, and without a second operator to trip it. Had to drop em where they came off. Would have been nice to have rider to monitor machine. Had to swivel to right to watch bundles for proper tieing, while swivel to the left to keep lined up on uncut grain.

Ever ride a binder? Quite a rough, jerkey, unsettling ride to say the least.

we did ours for the club last weekend. club has a 5' McCormick, only misses when a ball of twine changes. worst crop we have had in years, weeds, a bunch. they loaded it direct, I'm keeping an eye it for heating, I would hate to see the shed burn. you are right about the bumpy ride on the binder, but I would rather do that than load wagons. good luck with the oats

My Grandfather and I (age 8 - 12) would scythe and stook hay for his sheep. I have a picture of us bringing the hay to the barn, now all I have to do is find the pic. Will post when I do. GOOD memories.

I remember shocking orchard grass many a day, and when I got older I rode the binder ,it was an IHC rubber with rubber tires, and the sheath carrier was very hard to hold with 8 of them on it. We threshed a lot of orchard grass seed, I also bagged and sowed the bags when I was young, we had a Red River Special threshing machine, those were the good ole days for sure, lots of good memories

ooh yes, used to be my job to drive the w6 since i was about 10 yrs. old while dad rode the binder. we used binder right up till 1973 when we got a massey super 92 combine.
