thanks to everyone that helped me on my last post, i picked up an old d4 t5 cat, originally thought it was a 7u, but the seller i got it from was just going off the manual he had for it, once i read the tag i found out its true id, im going to go through all the fluids, does anyone know what would be best for the engine, pony, injector, trans etc etc, i was thinking a standard 15/40 with some lucas eng oil stabilizer, not too sure on the transmission, the manual im using is probably pre modern oils

Skip the additives they are already in the oil. If that has the brass screen for oil filter just wash them out in some fuel oil and then reuse them. It would be more important to make sure the fluids are up to level than worrying about changing them all. The final drives need to be drained under the steering clutches with out oil being put back in as that is drainage through the seals. The D-4 we have I have drained those plugs for 50years and grandpa was draining them since he bought it new. I will go out on a limb and guess he didn't have to for a few years. And it was never much of any quantity maybe a cup once a year sometimes. Ours is a 4G8 for serial.
Do you have a grease gun for the track rollers? It will unless they have been changed be greaseable. along with the front idler.

Cat recommends straight 30w diesel oil for the diesel engine and injectors. Non detergent 30w for the pony and 80-90 gear oil for trany and final drives. 00 grade grease for the rollers and idlers

that sounds good, i have to double check the fittings but i think the rollers do have fittings, since i have no idea of the history on maintenance i will just go through all the fluid and start out fresh, thanks for the input

great, i wonder why they recommend non detergent for the pony, i could not find that in my manual, my poor pony's oil is all fuel contaminated, most likely from the previous owner not shutting down the engine with fuel cut off

I'm sorry--made a mistake on the pony oil--Cat calls it CO grade oil which also goes in the Diesel--also states that it is a series 2 oil
the starting engine oil may also be a straight mineral oil or meets MIL-L-2104A
if the pony oil has been diluted its best to check crankshaft end play as the main bearings may have been compromised

By all means change the pony oil. It only
takes a quart. Any 30w oil same as diesel
OK. Pony won't start or run right with fuel
contamination.

no problem, ill check, hopefully its still snug

maybe mine was not that bad, oil did stink of fuel but ran pretty good, ill still flush it out, good thing its only a quart to fill
