My 1997 Ford F-150 pickup (just rolled up 100K) suddenly today developed a problem with the instrument panel. None of the gauges, speedometer, etc. function at all. Anybody know what the problem might be? Is there a particular fuse that might be the problem? Or something else? Thanks!

I would check fuses first. That is an electronic instrument panel, and if it loses power, it will stop working. You do have 2 fuse boxes - one is under the hood, and the other is under the dash. Make sure to check them both.

If you still have the glovebox owners manual, (and if you don't, shame, shame), it should have a photo or diagram of the fuse box and which fuses and breakers control which circuits. I have a similar problem with my 86 F-150, the only gauge that works is the ammeter. The radio and clock don't work and the wipers only now and then. I think I have either a loose ground or a bad feed wire. And I'm getting too old to be laying around in the floor trying to check wires under the dash!

Mine did that when the shifter got loose, apparently there are wires inside it for the over drive button and I jammed it into park one day and ripped the wiring, had to put a ew shifter lever on it with the new wiring..lost all my dash functions when I did that

If it is 4wd, it probably won't go into gear also. Mine ended up being a $500.00 on board computer problem....

For auto trans, if you find this fuse is blown then the most common problem is in the TCS switch wiring (O/D cancel switch). The wiring constantly moves and rubs on the shift tube and top of column every time you move the shifter. Sometimes he wiring simply breaks and the switch becomes inoperative, but the exposed wires can ground out and blow the fuse too.

I have seen a few inst clusters go bad along with loose connections/pins at the back of the cluster. Is it intermittent or did it quit all together? Is it just the gauges or the warning lights and illumination too?

There may be a relay on fuse panel that looks like a little black box that could be the problem. If you have two relays that are the same, swap them and see if trouble goes somewhere else. Check both fuse panels for same relay to swap out.
